  • Straight Outta 4chan: Exploring the Album Art of the White Supremacist “Moon Man” Music Project

Open Access•Grant Peeler, Zacharias P Pieri et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2025

While there has been research on the cultural products of white power groups, this project qualitatively examines one piece of the contemporary far right ecosystem—white power music album covers. More specifically, we examine 99 album covers featuring “Moon Man,” an imaginary character developed by anonymous music artists to better understand the symbols and ideas of this movement. The study finds that Moon Man was present on 84.8% of record cove…

    Open Access•Jessica M Grosholz, Sandra Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Crime Media Culture An…•2025•References: 22

Scholars, national security officials, and top law enforcement officers continue to argue that far-right extremism represents one of the most pressing forms of terrorism in the United States. Despite this, the current scholarship on far-right extremism is lagging, particularly in regard to the non-violent activities of these groups like music. Of the research that does exist, few examine these activities through a critical gendered lens despite t…

  • Framing the climate emergency: The role of music in Extinction Rebellion

    Zacharias P Pieri•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2025•References: 29

This paper addresses the role of music in Extinction Rebellion (XR), a radical environmental movement founded in the UK in 2018. Through an analysis of the lyrics and sound of 80 songs (which comprise XR's 'Rebellion Song Book') XR's music is presented as both a purposeful strategy (i.e. a framing mechanism) for articulating core grievances and their accompanying solutions, and as a binding mechanism that works to reinforce solidarity and collect…

  • Learning the lessons of Afghanistan: The changing prospects of negotiations between JNIM and the Malian government

Zacharias P Pieri, Ahmad Murid Partaw•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2024•References: 5

This paper considers the negotiation strategies of the Taliban in Afghanistan and JNIM in Mali. It examines negotiation paths, whether jihadists learn from each other, and why some negotiations succeed over others. The Taliban's strategy inspired JNIM, but while the Taliban secured the USA's withdrawal in Afghanistan, JNIM has suffered from contextual churn in Mali. France vacated Mali, coups installed a military junta, the Islamic State in the G…

Zacharias P Pieri, Zacharias Pieri et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2024•Cited by: 1

This article investigates the lived experiences and roles of children under Boko Haram’s two factions. Unlike case studies of Islamic State “cubs,” children in Boko Haram have been neglected in the literature. Filling that gap, this article analyzes more than thirty videos and photograph sets from the two factions. Visual ethnography is utilized to examine material depicting children in both “staged” and “unstaged” roles in Boko Haram, and in way…

    Jessica M Grosholz, Zacharias P Pieri•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2020•Cited by: 10

White extremism in the U.S. has not received much attention in the literature, despite scholars arguing that it represents the most sustained form of terrorism in the U.S. While much of the research on extremist movements has focused on the groups’ violent acts, there has been significantly less attention on the nonviolent activities, such as music. Following a social movement theoretical framework, we set out to understand the role that music pl…

  • The Boko Haram Paradox: Ethnicity, Religion, and Historical Memory in Pursuit of a Caliphate

    Zacharias P Pieri, Jacob Zenn•ARTICLE•African Security•2016•Cited by: 9

To Boko Haram, Nigeria is a colonial construct, lacking Islamic legitimacy and destined to lead society in a downward spiral of Western immorality. The only way to regain northern Nigeria’s former glory is through a repudiation of democracy, constitutionalism, and Western values and a return to Islamic governance on the model of the historic caliphates. We argue that Boko Haram’s leaders draw their inspiration and legitimacy from Usman Dan Fodio’…
