  • Elevated accuracy in recognition of subliminal happy facial expressions in patients with panic disorder after psychotherapy

Open Access•Zirong Qian, Yunbo Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

These data suggest that patients with PD exhibited a "happy-face recognition advantage" after psychotherapy. Less symptoms after treatment were related to a reduced fear bias. Thus, a differential facial emotion detection task could be a suitable tool to monitor response patterns and biases in individuals with ADs in the context of psychotherapy

  • Written in the face? Facial expressions during pleasant and unpleasant chills

Open Access•Kai Klepzig, Katharina Stender et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Music•2023

Chills are emotional peaks especially in response toward acoustic stimuli. In the present study, we examined facial expressions associated with pleasant and unpleasant chill experiences during music and harsh sounds by measuring electromyographic activity from facial corrugator and zygomatic muscles. A rubber bulb could be pressed by the participants to report chill intensities. During harsh sounds, increased activation of both corrugator and zyg…

  • Reading the Mind in the Eyes of Children Test (RME-C-T)

    Open Access•Rike Pahnke, Anett Mau‐Moeller et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Much research has been devoted to the development of emotion recognition tests that can be used to investigate how individuals identify and discriminate emotional expressions of other individuals. One of the most prominent emotion recognition tests is the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RME-T). The original RME-T has been widely used to investigate how individuals recognize complex emotional expressions from the eye region of adult faces. Howe…

  • Heartfelt memories

Julia Wendt, Mathias Weymar et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2018

During social interactions, we rapidly judge others' trustworthiness on basis of their facial characteristics. Face-based trustworthiness judgments may not only affect our current but also our future interactions because we seem to be more inclined to remember untrustworthy than trustworthy faces. Memory formation of salient stimuli like untrustworthy faces may be modulated by the interplay between the autonomic and central nervous system, which …

  • Enhanced processing of untrustworthiness in natural faces with neutral expressions

Alexander Lischke, Martin Junge et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2017

During social interactions, individuals rapidly and automatically judge others' trustworthiness on the basis of subtle facial cues. To investigate the behavioral and neural correlates of these judgments, we conducted 2 studies: 1 study for the construction and evaluation of a set of natural faces differing in trustworthiness (Study 1: n = 30) and another study for the investigation of event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to this set of nat…

  • Brain dynamics in spider-phobic individuals exposed to phobia-relevant and other emotional stimuli

Jarosław M Michałowski, Christiane A Melzig et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2009

Dense sensor event-related brain potentials were measured in participants with spider phobia and nonfearful controls during viewing of phobia-relevant spider and standard emotional (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral) pictures. Irrespective of the picture content, spider phobia participants responded with larger P1 amplitudes than controls, suggesting increased vigilance in this group. Furthermore, spider phobia participants showed a significantly enl…

  • The Facilitated Processing of Threatening Faces

Harald T Schupp, Arne Öhman et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2004

Threatening, friendly, and neutral faces were presented to test the hypothesis of the facilitated perceptual processing of threatening faces. Dense sensor event-related brain potentials were measured while subjects viewed facial stimuli. Subjects had no explicit task for emotional categorization of the faces. Assessing early perceptual stimulus processing, threatening faces elicited an early posterior negativity compared with nonthreatening neutr…

  • Sensorimotor Gating and Attitudes Related to Schizotypal Proneness

    Open Access•Almut I Weike, Alfons O Hamm et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2001

The magnitude of the startle eyeblink response is diminished when the startle eliciting probe is shortly preceded by another stimulus. This so called prepulse inhibition is interpreted as an automatic sensorimotor gating mechanism. There is substantial support for prepulse inhibition deficits in subjects suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders and in psychosis-prone normals as well. Thus, prepulse inhibition deficits may reflect vulnerabi…

  • Looking at pictures

    Open Access•Peter J Lang, Mark K Greenwald et al.•ARTICLE•Psychophysiology•1993

Colored photographic pictures that varied widely across the affective dimensions of valence (pleasant‐unpleasant) and arousal (excited‐calm) were each viewed for a 6‐s period while facial electromyographic (zygomatic and corrugator muscle activity) and visceral (heart rate and skin conductance) reactions were measured. Judgments relating to pleasure, arousal, interest, and emotional state were measured, as was choice viewing time. Significant cov…
