    Mildred Ramirez, Jeanne A Teresi et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2006•References: 44

BACKGROUND: Various forms of differential item functioning (DIF) in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) have been identified. Items have been found to perform differently for individuals of different educational levels, racial/ethnic groups, and/or of groups whose first language is not English. The articles in this section illustrate the use of different methods to examine DIF in relation to English and Spanish language administration of the…

  • The Relationship among Income, other Socioeconomic Indicators, and Functional Level in Older Persons

Open Access•Cathy Berkman, Cathy S Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1998•Cited by: 25•References: 3

Socioeconomic status (SES) is well established as a cause of morbidity and mortality, but relatively few studies have investigated the relationship between SES and functional level. Functional level is closely related to the use of long-term care services and is a more salient indicator of quality of life than specific diseases. We used data from 1,570 respondents in the Growing Older in New York City Study, a probability sample of people age 65 …

  • The relationship between ethnoracial group and functional level in older persons

    Cathy Berkman, Cathy S Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The objective of this study was to determine: (1) the differences between blacks, Latinos, and whites in relation to functional level, (2) whether these differences could be entirely explained by differences in socioeconomic status (SES) for both blacks and Latinos, and (3) which SES indicators might account for differences in function. Data from the 1570 respondents in the Growing Older in New York City Study, a representative sample of black, L…

  • The Mind and Mood of Aging

Boaz Kahana, Eva Kahana et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1984

  • Reevaluating the Place of Evaluation in Planning for Alternatives to Institutional Care for the Elderly

    Open Access•Barry J Gurland, Barry Gurland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1981•References: 16

This paper reviews an array of studies evaluating alternative settings and programs for long term care of the elderly. Some major methodological weaknesses of those evaluation studies are reviewed. Substantial ambiguities in the results of those studies are also examined. For both of these reasons, and others, research results have had little impact on policy for long term care of the elderly. The paper argues for an emphasis, in the future, on r…

Robert J Simon, Judy Kuriansky et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1976•References: 4

This communication examines the pathways of geriatric psychiatric patients in New York and London from the time of onset of a psychiatric episode to hospitalization. Informants of 50 patients in each city were interviewed with a semi-structured interview covering the events and the patient's activities prior to hospitalization. The results show that the time from the onset of the episode to hospitalization is significantly shorter in London than …

  • The Study of the Psychiatric Symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Barry J Gurland, Vivian Hoff Ganz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1972

This paper critically reviews studies of psychiatric symptoms in systemic lupus erythematosus. Reported findings vary by chronologic order of publication, clinical orientation of the author, mode of selecting cases and method of examination. This variation in findings reflects errors of method, the most common of which are biased selection of subjects, lack of comparison groups, unreliable recording of observations on the patient and inconsistent…

Vivian Hoff Ganz, Barry J Gurland et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1972

Psychiatric symptoms in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and in patients with rheumatoid arthritis were examined and compared using a structured interview covering 179 items of psychopathology. The systemic lupus erythematosus patients were 68 consecutive attenders at three general hospitals. The 36 rheumatoid arthritis patients were chosen from attenders at the same clinics as the systemic lupus erythematosus patients. The major conclu…
