  • A qualitative study on the perceptions toward illness and modern health care among Indigenous people in Peninsular Malaysia

Open Access•Rachel Sing-Kiat Ting, Durrah Sharifah Ahmad Azlan et al.•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2026•Referencias: 43

Due to the low utilization of modern health care among the Indigenous population, this qualitative study aims to explore their perceptions toward illness and modern health care. We employed fieldwork and interviewed 26 Indigenous participants in Malaysia. Through consensus thematic analysis, the transcripts were coded into four domains—type of illnesses encountered, explanations for illnesses, help-seeking methods, and determinants of health care…

  • A qualitative study exploring the epistemology of suffering within a Malaysian Indigenous tribe

    Open Access•Justine Jian-Ai Thong, Justine Jian‐ai Thong et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatric…•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 51

Despite the universal nature of suffering, few studies have examined how Indigenous ethnic minorities in non-western regions understand and respond to adversity. This study explored the epistemology of suffering among the Temiar ethnic group of Peninsular Malaysia using participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts of 43 participants were coded through inductive thematic analysis and a consensual qualitative approa…

  • The prehistoric peopling of Southeast Asia

Open Access•Hugh McColl, Fernando Racimo et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Ancient migrations in Southeast Asia The past movements and peopling of Southeast Asia have been poorly represented in ancient DNA studies (see the Perspective by Bellwood). Lipson et al. generated sequences from people inhabiting Southeast Asia from about 1700 to 4100 years ago. Screening of more than a hundred individuals from five sites yielded ancient DNA from 18 individuals. Comparisons with present-day populations suggest two waves of mixin…

  • A genomic history of Aboriginal Australia

    Open Access•Anna‐Sapfo Malaspinas, Anna-Sapfo Malaspinas et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2016

The population history of Aboriginal Australians remains largely uncharacterized. Here we generate high-coverage genomes for 83 Aboriginal Australians (speakers of Pama–Nyungan languages) and 25 Papuans from the New Guinea Highlands. We find that Papuan and Aboriginal Australian ancestors diversified 25–40 thousand years ago (kya), suggesting pre-Holocene population structure in the ancient continent of Sahul (Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania).…

  • Cardio-metabolic health risks in indigenous populations of Southeast Asia and the influence of urbanization

Open Access•Maude Elvira Phipps, Kevin KL Chan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

We describe the cardio-metabolic risk factors of seven indigenous communities in Malaysia. We report variable prevalence of obesity, cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes in the OA in contrast to the larger ethnic majorities such as Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia These differences are likely to be due to socio-economic effects and lifestyle changes. In some sub-tribes, other factors including genetic predisposition may also play a role.…

  • Admixture Patterns and Genetic Differentiation in Negrito Groups from West Malaysia Estimated from Genome-wide SNP Data

Timothy A Jinam, Maude Elvira Phipps et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2013

Southeast Asia houses various culturally and linguistically diverse ethnic groups. In Malaysia, where the Malay, Chinese, and Indian ethnic groups form the majority, there exist minority groups such as the "negritos" who are believed to be descendants of the earliest settlers of Southeast Asia. Here we report patterns of genetic substructure and admixture in two Malaysian negrito populations (Jehai and Kensiu), using ~50,000 genome-wide single-nu…

  • Mapping Human Genetic Diversity in Asia

Open Access•Mahmood Ameen Abdulla, Ikhlak Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2009

Patterns of Early Migration In order to gain insight into various migrations that must have happened during movement of early humans into Asia and the subsequent populating of the largest continent on Earth, the HUGO Pan-Asian SNP Consortium (p. 1541 ) analyzed genetic variation in almost 2000 individuals representing 73 Asian and two non-Asian populations. The results suggest that there may have been a single major migration of people into Asia …

  • An update of the general health status in the indigenous populations of Malaysia

Timothy A Jinam, Maude Elvira Phipps et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2008•Referencias: 1

Our findings reflect a shifting health burden and an epidemiological transition, particularly in the Temuan and Bidayuh. These changes could be attributed to dietary habits, lifestyles and socio-economic factors brought about by urbanization
