From imposition to concession, from compliance to resistance
Drawing on archival sources, this study traces the early history of the 'Turkish Institute of Business Administration', established in 1954 within the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University with Ford Foundation (FF) funding and Harvard Business School (HBS) guidance. The historical narrative describes what transpired on both the American and Turkish sides during this FF-HBS-initiated and directed transfer process. Through this account, the a…
Continuity and Change in Turkey’s Largest Industrial Enterprises, 1970–2010
Drawing on a newly constructed database, this paper examines for the first time the 100 largest industrial enterprises in Turkey over a period of four decades, from 1970 to 2010. As in several other late-industrializing countries, Turkey transitioned from an autarchic to a liberalized and internationalized economy after the 1980s. Our findings show a marked change in large enterprises from a balanced composition of stand-alone family businesses, …
Special issue introduction
Both business historians and organisation studies scholars study institutional change to understand the interactions between business and society. However, research approaches differ fundamentally, with organisational research focusing on theory-driven explanations, whereas historical research is rather theory-informed. The consequence of such disciplinary orientation is that interdisciplinary conversations rarely occur. For this special issue, w…
Defining Management
Defining Management charts the expansion of management as an idea and practice from a time when it was limited to churches and households to its current ubiquity, focusing in particular on the role of business schools, consultants, and business media in this process. How did an entire industry develop around business schools, consultants, and business media who are now widely considered the authorities regarding best management practice? This boo…
Historical perspectives on organizational stability and change
In this Introduction to the special issue, we begin by providing a brief review of the way history has been treated in existing work on organizational change, noting that a historical approach has either been non-existent or at best employed in a ‘supplementarist’ way. We then proceed to summarizing the empirical and theoretical foundations and the core arguments of the articles included in this special issue. In the final section, we conclude by…

The French, the German and the American
Like in other parts of Europe and, indeed, the United States, early initiatives in the Ottoman Empire for higher education in business date back to the second half of the 19thcentury. After a number of aborted attempts, the opening of a commercial school in İstanbul (Hamidiye Ticaret Mektebi) in 1883 under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade marked the beginning of business education in the Empire, purportedly, at the “higher” level. The Commer…
From Betriebswirtschaftslehre to Human Relations
This article examines Turkish management literature from its beginnings in the mid-1930s up to the mid-1960s. The study traces and explores the impact of economic and political as well as institutional developments on the extent and changes in the reception that different management approaches have enjoyed in this formative period. Investigation of the management literature produced over the course of the 30-year time span shows that the business…
