Human Trafficking Victims in Europe
Human trafficking rates in Europe continue to rise despite the presence of comprehensive legal frameworks and policy initiatives. Using 2012–2022 Eurostat data, this study examines key trends and patterns in trafficking victimization across Europe. The analyses reveal notable shifts in the nature and scope of trafficking: the number of victims per 100,000 inhabitants increased by 12.44%, while the ratio of convicted-to-suspected offenders in huma…

The Relation Between Restriction Policies against Covid-19, Economic Growth and Mortality Rate in Society
How do mortality rate of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and economic growth of countries are affected by high restrictions and compulsory measures? This study confronts this question through a comparative analysis of countries that implement high and low level of restrictions against COVID-19 in order to understand whether high levels of restrictions are better at diminishing the adverse impacts of COVID-19 on public health and economies. Th…
New directions of technologies pointing the way to a sustainable global society
One of the fundamental problems in modern economies is fossil-fuel pollution having detrimental effects on climate, environment and human population. The goal of this study is to identify and analyze new trajectories of technologies that can support energy and economic transition of countries for a sustainable development that reduces environmental pollution and some factors determining climate change. Results reveal that technologies with promis…
Disparate incarceration rates of foreign citizens in Europe compared to Anglo‐Saxon countries
While the relationship between immigration and crime has been the focus of international research, particularly in Europe and North America, less attention has been paid to different rates of incarceration of foreign citizens between countries. Using data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on persons held in prison between 2015 and 2019, this study examines the impact of nationality on incarceration rates. The principal findings su…
High potential of technology to face new respiratory viruses
Some countries in the presence of unforeseen Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), have experienced lower total deaths, though higher numbers of COVID-19 related infections. Results here suggest that one of the explanations is the critical role of ventilator technology in clinical health environment to cope with the initial stage of COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Statistic…
New Perspectives in Innovation Failure Analysis
In turbulent environments, one of the fundamental problems is the high risk of failure in new innovation projects that affects organizational behaviour and performance of firms. The study here clarifies the theoretical structure of project-level failure proposing a definition and three general types of determinants: errors in planning and design, in project execution and marketization. Innovation failure is when organizations do not achieve the m…
Scientific laws of research funding to support citations and diffusion of knowledge in life science
One of the main problems in scientometrics is to explore the factors that affect the growth of citations in publications to identify best practices of research policy to increase the diffusion of scientific research and knowledge in science and society. The principal purpose of this study is to analyze how research funding affects the citation-based performance of scientific output in vital research fields of life science, which is a critical pro…

Evolution and structure of research fields driven by crises and environmental threats
hardly known in social studies of science and scientometrics. In particular, the ecosystem and dynamics of research fields during crisis are vital aspects for explaining and planning the scientific development, and allocating resources efficaciously toward positive societal impact. This study here endeavors to analyze the evolution and structure of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) research, a new research field emerged and driven by a global p…
What is the relationship between research funding and citation-based performance? A comparative analysis between critical disciplines
The effects of atmospheric stability with low wind speed and of air pollution on the accelerated transmission dynamics of Covid-19
The goal of this study is to explain the relation among atmospheric stability/turbulence (considering wind speed), air pollution and the spread of COVID-19 to provide insights into environmental risk factors of specific regions. Results reveal that cities with high atmospheric stability, based on a low wind speed, and frequently high levels of air pollution – exceeding safe levels of ozone or particulate matter – had higher numbers of COVID-19 re…
Technological Innovation
Technological innovation is when inventions of new things and/or new ways of doing things are transformed into usable devices and applications to enable organizations and/or adopters to take advantage of important opportunities, to cope with consequential problems or environmental threats. Technological innovation is an element of the complex system of technology directed to satisfy needs, achieve goals, and solve problems of adopters in society.…
Factors determining the diffusion of Covid-19 and suggested strategy to prevent future accelerated viral infectivity similar to Covid
This study has two goals. The first is to explain the geo-environmental determinants of the accelerated diffusion of COVID-19 that is generating a high level of deaths. The second is to suggest a strategy to cope with future epidemic threats similar to COVID-19 having an accelerated viral infectivity in society. Using data on sample of N = 55 Italian province capitals, and data of infected individuals at as of April 7th, 2020, results reveal that…

Patterns of innovative outputs across climate zones
Technological innovation is a vital human activity that interacts with geographic factors and the natural environment. The purpose of the present study is to explain the relationship between climate zones and innovative outputs in order to detect factors that can spur technological change and, as a consequence, human development. The findings show that innovative outputs are high in geographical areas with temperate climate. In effect, warm tempe…

What are the likely interactions among innovation, government debt, and employment
The study here analyzes the interactions among labor, R&D intensity, and public expenditure on education (indicators of innovation), considering public debt of countries. The study is based on 27 European countries over the 1995–2009 and applies multiple regression analysis. Main findings seem to be: a significant interaction of public expenditure on education and R&D intensity with employment rate, whereas an increase of general government conso…

The interaction between public and private R&D expenditure and national productivity
Starting from the epistemological position of the positive interaction between public and private R&D expenditures at country level for maintaining productivity growth, the purpose of this paper is to provide empiricist–positivist arguments of this stance in order to design R&D policy that supports national competitiveness in fast-changing and turbulent markets

Bureaucratization in Public Research Institutions
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the nature of bureaucratization within public research bodies and its relationship to scientific performance, focusing on an Italian case-study. The main finding is that the bureaucratization of the research sector has two dimensions: public research labs have academic bureaucratization since researchers spend an increasing part of their time in administrative matters (i.e., preparing grant applications, ma…

How research policy changes can affect the organization and productivity of public research institutes
Nowadays the governments of some countries reorganize public research laboratories to increase their efficiency and scientific knowledge transfer, more and more necessary to the competitiveness of firms and national economic growth. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between organizational changes and productivity in public research institutions within the Italian national system of innovation, during the period 1999–20…

A taxonomy of public research bodies
Nowadays the governments of industrialised countries, in the presence of reduced public resources, have to assign clear objectives to public research laboratories to increase the competitiveness of firms. The purpose of this article is to analyse the public research bodies of the National Research Council of Italy in order to pinpoint the main typologies operating in the national system of innovation (NSI). This research shows four main types of …
