Learning about Students’ Receiving Special Educational Support Experiences of Qualification, Socialization and Subjectification in Finnish Vocational Education and Training: A Narrative Approach
This paper airs the experiences of eighteen students with special educational needs completing their studies at a Finnish vocational institution, which has a mandate to provide intensive special support for the students. It contributes to the national and international discussion of education’s purposes and elaborates on students’ descriptions. The study frames a research question: To what extent are Biesta’s domains of good education—qualificati…
Are Necessary Identities Ever Disbelieved
The purpose of this paper is to bring out, by means of a simple thought experiment involving demonstratives, a discrepancy between what is expressed and what is believed (which contradicts the Theory of Direct Reference), and to consider some consequences of this - most notably, whether we might hold, for example, that the ancients never believed that Hesperus is not Phosphorus
The principle of the indiscernibility of identicals requires no restrictions
There is a certain argument against the principle of the indiscernibility of identicals (PInI), or the thesis that whatever is true of a thing is true of anything identical with that thing. In this argument, PInI is used together with the self-evident principle of the necessity of self-identity (“necessarily, a thing is identical with itself”) to reach the conclusion , which is held to be paradoxical and, thus, fatal to PInI (in its universal, un…
Adolescents' sense-making of alcohol-related risks: The role of drinking situations and social settings
The article explores how young people understand the risks of alcohol use and how these understandings are associated with differing drinking situations and social settings. By taking account of situational factors, the aim is to demonstrate how young people have highly nuanced notions of drinking styles that suit different drinking situations and of associated risks. The data for the research were gathered in 18 group interviews with Finnish nin…
Friendship and Social Emotions in Young Adult Finns' Drinking Diaries
In the article we examine the management of social emotions and friendship bonds by analysing the young adults' pub and drinking diaries. We assume that emotions that are embodied in the management of friendship ties can be reduced to the emotions of pride and shame. According to Scheff, as primary social emotions, they are present in all communication and action. They express for the participants of interaction the actual 'temperature' of social…
Reflexive Self-Talk and Situated Freedom in the Context of Sociability
This paper analyses narratives in drinking and pub diaries written by young Finns aged 23–35. Drinking occasions in Finland are highly sociable gatherings in which one is oriented towards intensive interaction with one's friends. Thus, in the diaries the writers also reflect upon their expectations, descriptions and evaluations of these gatherings and the sociability they offer. In the analysis we focus on how during these occasions the writers a…
Light transgression and heavy sociability: Alcohol in young adult Finns’ narratives of a night out
This article explores the distinctive characteristics of present-day drinking habits in Finland. The data are young adults’ narratives of their nights out obtained in interviews that asked about ideal, typical and disastrous nights out. The data set comprises 117 interviews (60 women and 57 men). Questions covered in this article include: What motivates young adults to drink? What kind of self-regulation do they exhibit in their drinking? Is gett…
Leibnizian Soft Reduction of Extrinsic Denominations and Relations
Extrinsic Denominations and Universal Expression in Leibniz
Frege’s Gedanken Are Not Truth Conditions
Michael Dummett has advanced, very influentially, the view that Frege means truth conditions by his notion of thought (Gedanke). My aim in this paper is to argue that Dummett and others are mistaken in this claim. First, Frege's aversion of the correspondence theory of truth does not square well with Dummett's claim. Secondly, and more importantly, Grundgesetze I, §32, is the only place where Frege even appears to be talking about truth condition…
