Transgenerational traumatization and sexualized violence: A systematic review on an omnipresent, shadowed theme in social work theory and practice
Sexualized violence against women has long-term effects across generations. The literature review here presented is connected to the three-year feminist participatory action research TRACES, which investigates the transgenerational impact of sexualized violence against women in northern Italy from a socio-ecological perspective. Various meetings with local social and healthcare professionals revealed a lack of specific methods to address the tran…
Gender Inequalities in Academia: Multiple Approaches to Closing the Gap
This special issue aims to contribute to the debate on gender inequalities in academia and the gender equality policies that address them. In this introduction we offer an overview of the debate and of the main research issues and theoretical perspectives, showing how a multiplicity of approaches are needed for both understanding and transforming higher education institutions. Macro, meso and micro level approaches illuminate the gendered individ…
Una società senza genere? Il potere trasformativo dell’utopia
This contribution is aimed at shedding light on how the concept of utopia is closely linked, both in terms of content and method, to the gender perspective and, more specifically, to feminist reflection. We do so by dwelling on some of the most influential voices that have contributed to the recent rediscovery of utopia as a sociological method and mobilizing force for critiquing and reacting to advanced capitalism and existing arrangements of ge…

Gender and Precarious Research Careers: A Comparative Analysis
The literature on gender and science shows that scientific careers continue to be characterised – albeit with important differences among countries – by strong gender discriminations, especially in more prestigious positions. Much less investigated is the issue of which stage in the career such differences begin to show up. \n \nGender and Precarious Research Careers aims to advance the debate on the process of precarisation in higher education a…
Fathers' Stories of Resistance and Hegemony in Organizational Cultures
This article focuses on the practices of resistance and hegemony that oppose change in gender cultures in organizations. It suggests that analysis of the narratives produced by organizational actors is a fruitful method with which to deal with issues of this kind. In particular, the analysis concentrates on how resistance and hegemony practices may affect the implementation of changes promoted at a normative level — as in the case of the Italian …
Stories of work/life transitions from the Italian public sector
Purpose The aim of this article is to overcome an endogenous view of work, as a category isolated from the other existential spheres, and to identify an alternative approach to understanding how (paid) work and other life domains interweave. Biographical transitions between work and non‐work are analysed, paying specific attention to the processes of gender positioning. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on the analysis of 60 narra…
Vertical segregation and gender practices. Perspectives of analysis and action
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the persistence of vertical segregation in the European labour market, suggesting an interpretation of the phenomenon (and a consequent basis for intervention) based on the concept of gender practice. Design/methodology/approach The paper is theoretical in nature. It consists of a brief survey of the main explanations proposed in the literature and of the approaches most frequently used to counte…
Casting the 'Other: Gender Citizenship in Politicians' Narratives
Challenging Hegemonic Masculinities: Men's Stories on Gender Culture in Organizations
The article emphasizes the importance of storytelling in helping or hindering a change in organizational practices brought about by the entry into force of a legislative measure. It concentrates in particular on the introduction of a normative change intended to reshape the dominant gender order by giving fathers the same rights to parental leave as mothers. Whilst storytelling can be an instrument of change, it may also be perceived and used as …
Entrepreneur‐mentality, gender and the study of women entrepreneurs
Uses the neologism “entrepreneur mentality” – paying implicit homage to Foucault's govermentality – to highlight how an entrepreneurial discourse is mobilized as a system of thinking about women entrepreneurs which is able to make some form of that activity thinkable and practicable, namely: who can be an entrepreneur, what entrepreneurship is, what or who is managed by that form of governance of economic relations? Discourses on women entreprene…
Casting the ‘Other: Gender citizenship in politicians’ narratives
In the past century the presence of women in the “public sphere” has increased considerably as a result of, amongst other things, the rapid increase in their levels of schooling, professional competences and labour market participation. Much more limited and slower, by contrast, has been the entry of women into the centers of decision-making and power. This paper proposes reflection on gender citizenship in political arenas, which are precisely th…
Doing Gender, Doing Entrepreneurship: An Ethnographic Account of Intertwined Practices
Traditional literature and research on entrepreneurship relies on a model of economic rationality alleged to be universal and agendered. This article presents a description of the processes that position people as 'men' and 'women' within entrepreneurial practices and as 'entrepreneurs' within gender practices, relying on an ethnographic study carried out in small enterprises in Italy. Our analysis shows how gender and entrepreneurship are enacte…
