Thoughts on the etymologies of enn and hinn in Nordic
This contribution focuses on Stroh-Wollin’s (2020 in NJL ) etymologies of the Nordic definite articles enn and hinn and contrastive hinn / hitt . While I do not contest her central claim that Old Icelandic enn and Mainland Scandinavian hinn have separate historical origins, I do argue that her etymologies should not be accepted over more conventional ones already present in the literature. First, the etymology of enn should, along traditional lin…
Deconstructing categories syncretic with the nominal complementizer
This paper investigates the internal structure of categories syncretic with the complementizer from a nanosyntactic perspective (cf. Starke 2009; 2014; Caha 2009). The (emotive factive) that- complementizer in Germanic, Romance, Hellenic, Slavic and Finno-Ugric languages has the same morphophonological form as other nominal categories, like demonstrative, interrogative, relative pronouns and indeterminate nouns. We claim that this homophony is no…
The Nanosyntax of Spatial Deixis
This paper provides a fine-grained morphosyntactic analysis of spatial deixis. We propose that the universal core of spatial deixis is a three-way contrast: Proximal 'close to speaker', Medial 'close to hearer', and Distal 'far from speaker and hearer'. This system arises from three features merged as heads in a single universal functional sequence: Dx 3 > Dx 2 > Dx 1 . The hierarchy is understood in terms of superset-subset relations, such that …
Intraparadigmatic cyclic and roll-up derivations in the Old Norse reinforced demonstrative
This paper presents a case study in intraparadigmatic variation. It begins with a fine-grained morphological decomposition of the reinforced demonstrative pronoun in Old Norse. Five distinct morphemes are identified, and it is shown that there are three patterns into which these morphemes can be assembled within the paradigm. Applying Cinque’s (
Vietnamese and the NP/DP parameter
This paper investigates the place of Vietnamese in the binary NP/DP typology as formulated by Bošković (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010). Vietnamese patterns with NP languages when it comes to its lack of a genuine definite determiner, the presence of radical pro-drop, and its lack of number morphology, but it patterns with DP languages when it comes to the presence of TP, subject expletives, and subject-object extraction asymmetries. The mixed status of …
