Optimising motivation in adventure education and outdoor learning: Insights from the last 20 years of self-determination theory research
This paper explores the development of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) over the past two decades and its potential contribution to enhancing participation and engagement in adventure education and outdoor learning (AEOL). We examine the theoretical and conceptual advancements within SDT and pinpoint avenues for future exploration in AEOL. In linking SDT with AEOL, we aim to invigorate both fields and stimulate collaborative research. SDT’s focus …
Family Social Capital and Sustainable Well-Being: Navigating Chinese Adolescents’ Well-Being During Covid-19 Lockdown
The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption as governments took actions to limit the spread of the virus. Measures such as physical distancing and lockdowns changed living conditions, leading to challenges such as social isolation and reduced connectedness. This study explores COVID-19’s impact on adolescents’ well-being, emphasising family social capital, which refers to supportive adult-child relationships that foster well-being and enha…
Children’s, parents’ and educators’ understandings and experiences of digital resilience: A systematic review and meta-ethnography
Supporting children to be digitally resilient when facing online adversity is an increasingly important developmental task. However, conceptual knowledge underpinning digital resilience and how this operates among children and across their home, community and societal contexts is embryonic. A systematic review and meta-ethnography of research focusing on the understandings and experiences of digital resilience of children aged 8–12, their parents…
A classification system for teachers' motivational behaviors recommended in self-determination theory interventions
Teachers' behavior is a key factor that influences students' motivation. Many theoretical models have tried to explain this influence, with one of the most thoroughly researched being self-determination theory (SDT). We used a Delphi method to create a classification of teacher behaviors consistent with SDT. This is useful because SDT-based interventions have been widely used to improve educational outcomes. However, these interventions contain m…

Job pressure and ill-health in physical education teachers: The mediating role of psychological need thwarting
Self-Determination Theory and Diminished Functioning: The Role of Interpersonal Control and Psychological Need Thwarting
Drawing from self-determination theory, three studies explored the social-environmental conditions that satisfy versus thwart psychological needs and, in turn, affect psychological functioning and well-being or ill-being. In cross-sectional Studies 1 and 2, structural equation modeling analyses supported latent factor models in which need satisfaction was predicted by athletes’ perceptions of autonomy support, and need thwarting was better predic…
Psychological Need Thwarting in the Sport Context: Assessing the Darker Side of Athletic Experience
Research in self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2002) has shown that satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs in sport contexts is associated with enhanced engagement, performance, and well-being. This article outlines the initial development of a multidimensional measure designed to assess psychological need thwarting, an under-studied area of conceptual and practical importance. Study 1 generated a pool of items designed …
