  • Early–middle Holocene relative sea-level oscillation events recorded in a submerged speleothem from the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

    Open Access•Gina E Moseley, D A Richards et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•References: 6

Geomorphological and biological archives of relative sea-level change in the western North Atlantic-Caribbean region following the Last Glacial Maximum have traditionally supported the hypothesis of a punctuated rise towards the present sea level. Such records, however, are often at insufficient resolution to discern centennial-scale changes. In caves where the water table is closely controlled by sea level, active periods of speleothem growth co…

  • Effective precipitation in southern Spain (∼ 266 To 46 Ka) based on a speleothem stable carbon isotope record

    Open Access•Edward J Hodge, D A Richards et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

We present the longest-duration directly dated terrestrial palaeoclimate record from the western Mediterranean region: a flowstone speleothem from Gitana Cave, southeast Spain. The main phase of growth was 274 to 58 ka, dated by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) U-series methods. Effective precipitation, which we consider primarily responsible for flowstone calcite δ 13 C variations, measured at 300 μm resolu…

  • Late Quaternary Paleoclimate in Semiarid Northeastern Brazil from U-Series Dating of Travertine and Water-Table Speleothems

    Open Access•Augusto S Auler, Peter L Smart•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Fossil travertine and subaqueous speleothems in presently dry caves suggest periods of enhanced ground-water recharge during the Quaternary Period in semiarid northeastern Brazil. Travertine deposits and water-table speleothems were dated by the 230 Th/ 234 U technique, yielding new evidence for the timing of past periods of increased rainfall. The travertine was deposited in two distinct phases, extensive in situ deposits during marine isotope s…

  • Extremely Large Variations of Atmospheric 14 C Concentration During the Last Glacial Period

Open Access•J Beck, J Warren Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2001

A long record of atmospheric 14 C concentration, from 45 to 11 thousand years ago (ka), was obtained from a stalagmite with thermal-ionization mass-spectrometric 230 Th and accelerator mass-spectrometric 14 C measurements. This record reveals highly elevated Δ 14 C between 45 and 33 ka, portions of which may correlate with peaks in cosmogenic 36 Cl and 10 Be isotopes observed in polar ice cores. Superimposed on this broad peak of Δ 14 C are sever…

  • Trace element variations in coeval Holocene speleothems from GB Cave, southwest England

    Open Access•Mark S Roberts, Peter L Smart et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 1

We report trace element (Mg, Sr and Ba) records based on laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) from three coeval Holocene speleothems from Great Chamber in GB Cave, southwest England. The trace element records are placed on a common timescale on the basis of a suite of TIMS 230 Th- 234 U ages. This permits assessment of the reproducibility of the trace element record in coeval speleothems. The trace element recor…

  • The Hekla 3 volcanic eruption recorded in a Scottish speleothem

    Open Access•Andy Baker, Peter L Smart et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Recent research has demonstrated the presence of annual luminescent growth banding in a stalagmite from Sutherland, N.W. Scotland (Baker, Smart, Edwards and Richards, 1993). The banding record of this sample contains a short duration increase in annual band width, indicating a doubling of growth rate for a period of four years. Predicted growth rates derived from calcite precipitation kinetics are compared with observed growth-rate variability to…

  • Periodic Variations in Late Pleistocene Speleothem Abundance in Britain

    Open Access•Kenji Kashiwaya, T C Atkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

Temporal change in the growth of speleothems in the United Kingdom during the past 150,000 years is shown to be related to the insolation variation by the Milankovitch theory. The speleothem data compiled by Gordon et al. (1989. Quarternary Research 31, 14–26) have two Milanokovitch frequencies: the ca. 40,000-yr period related to change in the earth's obliquity and the ca. 20,000-yr period related to the precession of the equinoxes. The abundanc…

  • Dating of Late Pleistocene Interglacial and Interstadial Periods in the United Kingdom from Speleothem Growth Frequency

    Open Access•David Gordon, Peter L Smart et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

The growth of speleothems is indicative of interglacial and interstadial conditions in the United Kingdom, since their growth is dependent on two factors. First, the occurrence of significant diffuse groundwater recharge and, second, the biogenic production of carbon dioxide in the soil, both are dependent on temperature and water availability. The growth frequency of speleothems is examined using a cumulative distributed error frequency method a…
