  • Affect's Social Lives

Open Access•A Hofman, Tanja Petrović et al.•BOOK•Affect's Social Lives•2023•References: 42

Why is the talk about Yugoslavia still emotionally charged and situated in the registers of passion, pain, sentimental recollections, or nostalgia even 30 years after its violent dissolution? How is the sphere of the affective, sensory, and embodied fundamental to understanding the historical project of Yugoslavia and its afterlives? Social Lives of Affect: Post-Yugoslav Reflections addresses these questions and explores how the attempts to conce…

  • A microphone in a chandelier

    Open Access•Martin Pogačar•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2022•References: 10

In this study, I examine a recording of an old Slovenian choral song made in 1941 during the Fascist occupation. Recorded music, I argue, has the capacity to condense the past and to potentiate the affective mnemonic imagination of the past regardless of its mediated form. • Music and Memory

    Martin Pogačar•ARTICLE•Southeastern Europe•2015•References: 4

This article argues that after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Yugoslav rock music lost little cultural value and is still a prominent trigger of vernacular memories of the socialist Yugoslav past, as well as a vehicle of socio-political commentary in post-Yugoslav contexts. In this view, music is understood as a galvaniser of affective relationships to that past and to post-Yugoslav presents. In the first part of the article, the author discus…

  • Yu-Rock in the 1980s

    Open Access•Martin Pogačar•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Trivial though they may seem, popular culture and mass media actually present an important part of our quotidian and play significant roles in defining dimensions of our environments—past and present, internal as well as external. Mediatized images of bygone times and faraway places invade and transfix the physical geographies of the living environment; invade and transfix, extremely subtly, symbolic geographies of every single human being. Despi…
