The Life of Events
The paper focuses on the event of ‘Ingrid‐and‐Manuel’—a Hurricane and Tropical Storm that hit Acapulco, Mexico in 2013. It traces what this event was and how it remains for people in and beyond Acapulco. It does so in the context of a place where the lines between events and everyday life are often blurred, and yet the event was still named and felt as an exception to ordinary life. By focusing on how exceptionality was and is produced, the paper…
Knowledge coproduction at the periphery of the urban and academia
In this paper I focus on the Coyuca Resilient to Climate project which was based on a coproduction process initiated by academics in Acapulco’s Metropolitan Area. Using Actor-Network Theory (ANT), I trace project’s implementation, considering the implications and complications of the process for the research team, and the role of coproduction for planning just cities. I argue that it is vital to consider the specific situation with regards to the…
The long-term effects of housing policy instrumentation
This paper explores the long-term effects of Rio de Janeiro’s slum upgrading, a key policy instrument of municipal housing since the 1990s, and an essential reference for housing initiatives worldwide. From a theoretical stance, this paper builds on the Political Sociology of Public Policy Instruments (PPI) and actor–network theory (ANT). The paper argues that Rio’s slum upgrading instrumentation, that is, its constitution and use, has been key t…
Evictions and housing policy evolution in Rio de Janeiro
This article explores Rio’s housing policy transformation over the past 2 decades to reveal how it has contributed to rendering evictions and relocations possible and acceptable in the wake of mega-events. Theoretically, the article adopts actor-network theory (ANT) and the political sociology of public policy instruments (PPI) and delves into the unfolding of Rio’s slum upgrading instrumentation from 1993 to 2012. This article argues that the we…
