Green Windows or Old Traps? Geopoliticization, Extractivism, and Policy Challenges in the Global South
But we are a rich nation
Crossing the ‘Global South Frontier’
Despite increasing calls to globalise and pluralise the field, International Relations (IR) remains dominated by institutions based in the Global North. This paper engages with the theme of exclusion with access by complementing ongoing critiques of the discipline’s epistemic hierarchies by examining how Latin American scholars are represented in top-tier IR journals. While the inclusion of Global South voices has become more visible, such inclus…
Neoclassical Realism, Global International Relations, and the unheard echoes of Realist practices from the South
Neoclassical Realism popularised by including context into a structuralised worldview. However, far from a novelty, Global South scholars have been promoting similar Realist course corrections, reducing parsimony, and increasing explanation. This article compares Ayoob’s Subaltern Realism, Escudé’s Peripheral Realism, and Yan’s Moral Realism, showcasing how originality is displayed via hybridisation, mimicry, and denationalisation of ideas. There…
Saudi Arabia’s ambivalent stance on the Russia-Ukraine war
This article examines Saudi Arabia's complex positioning in the Russia-Ukraine war, considering its adherence to the norm of equal sovereignty alongside its foreign-policy determinants. While the kingdom outwardly supported Ukraine's right to sovereignty following Russia's invasion in February 2022, its continued cooperation with Russia, notably through OPEC+, paints a different picture. Further complicating matters are Saudi Arabia's historical …
Saudi Arabian strategy reassessment since 2003
This article argues that the well-discussed international behaviour change in Saudi Arabia, rather than being a consequence of the so-called Arab Spring, resulted from a grand strategy reassessment in the early 2000s. Grand strategy concerns how states assess the geostrategic environment, plan resource allocation and prioritize policy to meet national interests. Since the 1970s, Riyadh judged its geopolitical vulnerabilities concerning Iran and I…
Driving in the middle of the road
King Salman and prince Mohammad bin Salman yearn to shift Saudi Arabia away from oil dependency via the project Vision 2030, which includes a set of liberalisations for women, such as legalisation of driving and economic empowerment. Topics related to women have been a taboo to Saudi society; thus, it is interesting to understand their role in these reforms and their negotiation of rights within the state. I argue that these reforms are not polit…
Roles and International Behaviour
Middle Eastern geopolitics are dynamic and complex. Ideological and religious matters interplay with domestic and international structures, generating several types of relations. This article aims to analyse the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, two powerhouses that compete for leadership in the Gulf. The objective is to understand this competition through the lens of Role Theory, focusing on the national role conceptions that both countries…
