  • A Place of Last Drink Initiative: Effects on Various Types of Crime

    Traci L Toomey, Kathleen M Lenk et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Place of last drink (POLD) is a law enforcement strategy designed to decrease the service of alcohol to intoxicated patrons (i.e., overservice). When officers respond to an alcohol-related incident, they inquire about and record the place where the involved individuals last drank alcohol; this information can help identify licensed alcohol establishments that show a pattern of overserving alcohol. We evaluated the effects of a POLD in…

  • ‘A Final Solution for Humanity’? Modern Design and the Ambivalence of Redemption in Post-War West Germany

    Open Access•Natalie Scholz•ARTICLE•Cultural History•2023

During the Third Reich, a modern shape of everyday objects was propagated as realising a German nation defined as an organic and racial entity. What happened to this cultural nexus after 1945? Historical scholarship has emphasized above all that modern design went on to be successfully framed as a cultural good that redeemed West Germany from the Nazi past. This redeeming opposition between the political meanings of modern design before and after…

  • Ghosts and Miracles: The Volkswagen as Imperial Debris in Postwar West Germany

    Open Access•Natalie Scholz•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2020•References: 21

Starting with the author's own experience of ghostliness in the archive, the article explores the political meaning of the postwar Volkswagen in West Germany as embodiment of the country's 'economic miracle.' The investigation follows the uncanny in texts and images about the Volkswagen between 1945 and 1960 and argues that the car carried with it a 'public secret' as a 'debris' from the Nazi empire that silently transcended the 1945 divide. This…

  • The People's Car: A Global History of the Volkswagen Beetle

    Natalie Scholz•ARTICLE•German History•2014

To this day, the Beetle arouses emotions of enthusiasm and admiration in many different parts of the world, among them Brazil, Mexico, Israel, South Africa, the United States and, of course, Germany. It was the first car that sold more often than Ford’s Model T, but it did so on a much more global scale and it embodied a larger variety of cultural meanings. There is, therefore, good reason closely to examine how this car was able to become a ‘glo…

  • Genre et éthique des objets dans le cinéma de l'Allemagne d'après-guerre

    Natalie Scholz•ARTICLE•Clio•2014•References: 25

The essay focuses on two rubble films "The Murderers Are Among Us" and "Between Yesterday and Tomorrow" in order to explore how these films deal with the legacy of Nazi material culture in gendered terms. The objects on screen are analyzed as ‘tangible events’ relating to the disrupted order of things in postwar Germany, including the legacy of dispossession and ‘Aryanization’ of German space. Just as the problem of male guilt relates in these fi…

  • Demokratie im Schatten der Gewalt: Geschichten des Privaten im deutschen Nachkrieg, ed. Daniel Fulda, Dagmar Herzog, Stefan-Ludwig Hoffmann and Till van Rahden

    Open Access•Natalie Scholz•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2012

This is an unusual volume, in a way which is not really clear from the title. It deals with the private as a central field of debate and with the experience of Germans struggling to build a democratic society after the Second World War, as well as, intertwined with this, the different ways of coping with a legacy of war and destruction. It is, however, the editors’ decision to investigate these themes by uniting in a single volume both historical…
