The non-nationalist left was prominent among the groups that opposed Franco in the Basque Country. However, their fight has almost disappeared from the historical narratives Basque nationalists have formulated over the years. The end of ETA’s terrorist actions has forced its practitioners and supporters to reinvigorate traditional historical accounts about their recent past. Their goal was to legitimize terrorist act, presenting them as an inesca…

  • Mitochondrial DNA affinities at the Atlantic fringe of Europe

    Open Access•Ana M Gonzalez, Ana González et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2003•Cited by: 12•References: 36

Mitochondrial DNA analysis of Atlantic European samples has detected significant latitudinal clines for several clusters with Paleolithic (H) and Neolithic (J, U4, U5a1, and U5a1a) coalescence ages in Europe. These gradients may be explained as the result of Neolithic influence on a rather homogeneous Paleolithic background. There is also evidence that some Neolithic clusters reached this border by a continental route (J, J1, J1a, U5a1, and U5a1a…

  • Y-Chromosome Differentiation in Northwest Africa

    Carlos Flores, Nicole Maca-Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Variation of seven Y-chromosomal DNA polymorphisms, one microsatellite (DYS19), and six biallelic markers (DYS287, DYS271, SRY-2627, SRY-1532, 92R7, and M9), were studied in males from Northwest Africa. To evaluate the degree of differentiation in this region, males from neighboring areas such as the Iberian Peninsula and sub-Saharan Africa were also typed. The results show a large number of paternal lineages of Northwest African origin (over 75%…
