China's Cold War Science Diplomacy
Income Inequality and the Allocation of China's Foreign Aid
Literature on the impacts of Chinese development finance to developing countries has suggested that China's links to the global economy are contingent on their foreign policy. This study, however, concludes that China's foreign aid was directed not to countries with poor economic conditions, but toward inefficient and mismanaged economies with higher income inequality. We used a negative binomial model with a mixed effect to estimate the relation…
Ethnic Ties, Organized Opposition and Voter Defection in Authoritarian Elections
Existing studies of ethnic voting mainly focus on democratic elections. In electoral autocracies, politically subordinate ethnicity can help citizens coordinate against the incumbent. However, we argue that collective action will be constrained when the group grows large, as it becomes costly for its members to form common behavioural norms and carry out effective sanctions through shared ethnic ties under authoritarian repression. Drawing on uni…
In the interest of your bank and our country: Two encounters between China and the International Chamber of Commerce
This article examines China's path to joining the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), a private international organization founded in Paris in 1920, of which China was a member from 1931-1949 and from 1994 onwards. The article charts the actors and debates behind two meaningful encounters. The first took place while the Nanjing government was raising funds for economic reconstruction, and the ICC aimed to mediate China's fundraising efforts …

How Knowledge Sharing and Cohesion Become Keys to a Successful Graduation Project for Students from Design College
College students’ graduation projects reflect their teamwork abilities. The current research develops a practical framework and causal model of knowledge-sharing behavior, cohesion, and team performance for design college students in Taiwan. Using survey data collected from 115 students who completed their graduation projects in a design college, PLS-SEM was run to test the model. In addition, 11 students who were on teams that won competitions o…
Butter or Guns: Taiwan’s Economic Policy Toward China
Tensions between China and Taiwan have been heightened significantly lately. This paper is aimed at investigating the cross-Strait relations from Taiwan’s perspective concerning, in particular, Taiwan’s economic policy toward China. Indeed, China has long been Taiwan’s largest trading partner; yet, political relationship between the two has fluctuated over time. On the one hand, China has been an attractive market for Taiwanese businesses, but on…

Local Actions, National Policies and International Knowledge: Family Planning and Statistical Practices in Taiwan (1949–1980s)
Using an approach based on the sociology of quantification, this article illustrates how actors utilised statistics when importing family planning to Taiwan and exporting their experience to international policy makers. The functions of statistics—producing knowledge and making policies—assisted the implementation of international programmes in Taiwan, where any actions leading to a population decrease were prohibited in the 1950s. The Population…
Change and Continuity in Taiwan's Public Opinion on the Cross-Strait Economic Interactions
The Sunflower Student Movement was a significant event in Taiwan's political history. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, we argue that the effect of the movement on the attitude of the general public, particularly the young, toward the cross-Strait economic interactions and the perception that Taiwan may be forced to make political concessions resulting from such ties is limited. Based on the Taiwan National Security surveys, we find out that t…
