  • All Is Relative—A Call for Considering “Physiologically Informed” Control Conditions to Improve the Mechanistic Understanding of the Effects of Physical Exercise on Cognition

Open Access•Ferdinand Herold, Benjamin Tari et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Psychology•2026

There is a growing interest in elucidating the mechanisms that drive the benefits of physical exercise on cognitive performance. A key element for a better understanding of a particular phenomenon (e.g., the mediators of the exercise‐cognition interaction) is the selection of an appropriate control condition/group as the basis for causal inference. In contemporary practice, control conditions/groups used in exercise‐cognition research can be broa…

  • Worker Well‐Being and Quitting: What Can We Learn From Social Media Data

    Open Access•Sepehr Cyrusian, C Green•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2026

We examine the potential to measure worker well‐being using social media data. We utilize more than 345 million tweets from more than 4.1 million users from 2019 to 2022 in 323 cities across 46 US states. We construct a state‐month panel and demonstrate that our work‐related sentiment data predict quits. Our dynamic panel estimates show that a 1 standard deviation decrease in worker well‐being is associated with a 0.41 percentage point increase i…

  • Does testing young children influence educational attainment and wellbeing

Open Access•C Green, Ole Henning Nyhus et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2025•References: 1

Should young children be tested? Proponents view early testing as a necessary instrument for early targeting. Others consider it detrimental to child mental health and with little impact on educational performance. We exploit variation in low-stakes test-taking in mathematics amongst primary school children in Norway, traditionally a low-testing environment. We examine the introduction of difficult mathematics tests. These tests were introduced t…

  • Refugees and the educational attainment of natives: Evidence from Norway

Open Access•C Green, Jon Marius Vaag Iversen•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2022

Increases in immigration raise a range of challenges for schools. Existing research primarily investigates the impact of immigrants on native test scores and demonstrates mixed results. Using Norwegian register data and narrow within-school, within-family comparisons, we demonstrate negative effects of refugees on native math performance, and no effect on English or Norwegian performance. These effects are concentrated amongst groups of refugee c…

  • Incorporated in Westminster: Channels and Returns to Political Connection in the United Kingdom

    Open Access•C Green, Colin P Green et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2022•References: 47

In 2002, an amendment to UK parliamentary regulations removed restrictions on the participation of Members of Parliament (MPs) in parliamentary proceedings related to their corporate interests. Using this amendment, we demonstrate higher equity returns for FTSE 350 firms connected to an MP due to the increase in the expected value of political access. Following the amendment, MPs with corporate connections are more likely to be members of parliam…

  • Are Estimates of Non‐Standard Employment Wage Penalties Robust to Different Wage Measures? The Case of Zero‐hour Contracts in the UK

    Open Access•Egidio Farina, C Green et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2021

Evidence suggests that non‐standard jobs are associated with wage penalties. Yet, these jobs possess a range of undesirable characteristics that should generate compensating wage differentials. This evidence relies on derived wage variables, prone to measurement error likely to be correlated with employment contract. Stated‐rate hourly wage questions are not subjected to the same measurement issues. Using zero‐hour contracts in the UK, we show th…

  • Hierarchy and the Employer Size Effect on Wages: Evidence from Britain

    Open Access•C Green, Colin P Green et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 53

We argue that employer size wage effects reflect the role of hierarchy. Using matched employer–employee data and individual longitudinal data, we show that the employer size wage effects for supervisors are approximately twice those for non‐supervisors. We confirm sorting on supervisor ability, and present evidence of additional match‐specific wage returns for supervisors. We demonstrate that spans of control influence the establishment size retu…

    Open Access•Keith A Bender, C Green et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2019•References: 2

We show that couples sort on performance pay with dual receipt couples much more likely than predicted by random. In addition, we show that the return to performance pay appears largely invariant to whether one's spouse earns performance pay. The major exception is that among the college educated, the return to performance pay is larger for women when their spouse also receives performance pay. Thus, dual receipt households concentrate the return…

  • The Effect of Permanent Employment on Absenteeism: Evidence from Labor Reform in Spain

Open Access•Inmaculada García Mainar, María Inmaculada García Mainar et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Restrictive employment protection legislation has been highlighted as a key reason for lower labor productivity in Europe compared to the United States. Evidence in the literature has shown robust effects of employment protection on effort, though the effects appear too small to generate marked cross-country differences in labor productivity. The authors revisit this issue using representative data of private-sector workers in Spain. A range of l…

  • Share capitalism and worker wellbeing

    Open Access•Alex Bryson, Andrew E Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Labour Economics•2016

We show that worker wellbeing is determined not only by the amount of compensation workers receive but also by how compensation is determined. While previous theoretical and empirical work has often been preoccupied with individual performance-related pay, we find that the receipt of a range of group-performance schemes (profit shares, group bonuses and share ownership) is associated with higher job satisfaction. This holds conditional on wage le…

This paper uses panel data drawn from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey to provide new evidence of the links between unemployment, wages, job security, financial security and workers' well‐being for workers in flexible employment. Our findings indicate that workers in flexible employment encounter more unemployment and experience increased job insecurity; unemployment is associated with wage penalties. Lower wa…

The Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (APN+) conducted the first regional documentation of AIDS-related discrimination in Asia. This project was an action-based, peer-implemented study that aimed to develop an understanding of the nature, pattern and extent of AIDS-related discrimination in several Asian countries. Trained HIV-positive people interviewed 764 positive people in four countries (India 302; Indonesia 42; Thailand 33…

  • Canadian Competition Policy at a Crossroads

    C Green•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1981

The paper focuses on the current state of competition (anticombines) policy in Canada. Three recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions (Aetna (1977), K.C. Irving (1977) and Atlantic Sugar Refineries (1980)) threaten to make Canadian competition policy ineffective or even inoperative. The paper attempts to show that the Canadian anticombines laws have more economic content than is typically conceded and that by the mid-1970s competition policy was …

The small oval burial mound at Alfriston, East Sussex, being one of only twelve certain burial structures of the 3rd millennium bc in Sussex, was totally excavated in 1974 prior to its final obliteration by ploughing. The barrow was found to consist of a simple dump mound derived from material out of flanking ditches. It covered a single burial pit containing the crouched skeleton of a young female.
