Towards a sustainable city: Comparing aspects of sustainable urban form in neighbourhoods. Evidence from Chile
Leveraging open source land use and land cover data for urban and regional planning in transforming areas
A steadily growing repository of publicly available land use and land cover (LULC) data holds great potential for addressing pressing challenges, e.g., associated with climate change or profound societal and economic transformations. However, significant portions of this data remain underutilised. This article exemplifies the practical applicability of harnessing such data for advancing spatial planning within the Rhineland mining area, Germany –…
Creating an evidence base for managing structural change in the Rhineland Mining Area—evaluating open space applying a comprehensive set of indicators
Post-mining landscapes undergo thorough structural changes. Hereby, striking transitions take place concerning open spaces in particular. For the Rhineland Mining Area, the project DAZWISCHEN, with five thematic fields of action, in its first phase intends to capture the status quo of the region. Spatial talents and spatial barriers are identified as a result. Considering open space, we present a multi-method approach integrating basic land use d…
Introducing environmental-justice analysis into urban planning practices in the city of Bottrop, Germany
An analysis of the provision and accessibility of urban green infrastructure was carried out and combined with the spatial exposure of social-welfare recipients to noise, air pollution and weather extremes in the city of Bottrop, Germany. We found out that social-welfare recipients tend to live in areas where the exposure to multiple environmental burdens is higher compared to other statistical districts in the city. Ultimately, there is a real i…
Analysing Interlinked Frequency Dynamics of the Urban Acoustic Environment
As sustainable metropolitan regions require more densely built-up areas, a comprehensive understanding of the urban acoustic environment (AE) is needed. However, comprehensive datasets of the urban AE and well-established research methods for the AE are scarce. Datasets of audio recordings tend to be large and require a lot of storage space as well as computationally expensive analyses. Thus, knowledge about the long-term urban AE is limited. In …
Planning for Sustainable Green Urbanism: An Empirical Bottom-Up (Community-Led) Perspective on Green Infrastructure (GI) Indicators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan
Rising vulnerability of the urban green infrastructure (UGI) is grabbing global attention, for which inclusive urban landscape and greening policies (ULGP) and frameworks are crucial to support green growth. As such, this research intends to explore the local community's perspective to assemble sustainable UGI indicators for vital taxonomy of the urban green space (UGS) elements, aiming to develop a multi-functional and sustainable UGI-indicator-…
Impact of the Covid-19 Lockdown Measures on Noise Levels in Urban Areas—A Pre/during Comparison of Long-Term Sound Pressure Measurements in the Ruhr Area, Germany
Our results are in line with studies from European cities. Strikingly, all studies report noise reductions of about 5 dB. Aiming at a transformation to a health-promoting urban mobility can be a promising approach to mitigating health risks of noise in cities. Overall, the experiences currently generated by the pandemic offer data for best practices and policies for the development of healthy urban transportation-the effects of a lower traffic an…
