Interest Groups and Legislators’ Strategic Rhetoric Towards China During the Ratification of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in Latin America
This article analyses the speeches of legislators and the interventions of interest groups during the ratification procedures of the Free Trade Agreements signed by Chile, Costa Rica, and Ecuador with China. Our descriptive results suggest a focus on economic issues at the expense of human rights and democracy. Additionally, the rhetorical strategies employed by both lobbies and politicians reinforce the idea of non-alignment or strategic autonom…
Globalization in Latin America: The Law, Politics and Economics of Preferential Trade Agreements
The approach of Latin American countries to preferential trade agreements (PTAs) is a fascinating topic. There is a rich history of policymakers using PTAs to pursue different economic and political models of integration. What really stands out is the diversity of approaches and attitudes to the use of PTAs. While some countries have been rule-makers and have made innovative attempts to introduce new issues, others have been reluctant to use PTAs…
Navigating Geoeconomic Fragmentation: How Political Alignment Shapes Foreign Direct Investment to Asean
This research investigated how geopolitical alignment influences bilateral foreign direct investment (FDI) flows into ASEAN amid rising global fragmentation. We construct a geopolitical distance index using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voting data and validate it against the Ideal Point Distance (IPD) metric. Using an extended gravity model with bilateral FDI data from 2010 to 2023, the research ana…

Navigating US-China technology competition among Middle Powers: Study of Chilean response
Amid intensifying US–China rivalry over digital governance, middle powers like Chile face growing pressure to navigate an increasingly fragmented global order. This article examines Chile’s response through expert interviews and analysis of three key technology cases involving Chinese firms. The findings show that Chile has adopted a Hedging Strategy, limiting involvement in sensitive tech projects aligned with US security concerns, while continu…

News Sentiment Analysis: The Case of Chinese Vessels in the EEZs of Latin American Countries
This study analyzes how recent fishing disputes involving China and Latin American countries have been reported by local and global media. We conducted content and sentiment analysis of media articles, coding articles according to the sentiment (“positive,” “negative,” or “neutral”) they express toward China and the actions of its fishing fleet, based on the words used to describe the same. We also examined what topics are discussed in different …
