Cultivating community-based participatory research (CBPR) to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic: An illustrative example of partnership and topic prioritization in the food services industry
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced food service workers to experience complex decisions about health and safety, stress and mental health concerns, and longer-term concerns. Challenging health decisions included attempting to avoid an airborne infectious illness when employers were mainly only concerned with droplet precautions and trying to decide protocols for testing and isolation without clear guidance, free tests, or paid sick leave. Attending Patient Funerals as a Follow-Up Practice of Pediatric Oncologists
This study assessed pediatric oncology professionals’ attitudes and attendance at patient funerals. Many professionals endorsed some level of agreement that funeral attendance respects professional boundaries. Nearly all pediatric oncology professionals (89.2%) reported attending a patient funeral at least once, a rate significantly higher than estimates in other specialties ( p <.001). Attitudes and rates of attendance were slightly higher in ol…
Finding Meaning in Life After a Cancer Diagnosis: What Is the Role of Financial Strain
Finding meaning in life is important for maintaining physical and mental well-being. Obtaining a deeper understanding of activities that patients with cancer find meaningful is essential in improving cancer care and increasing meaning in life in these individuals. The sample of the present study consisted of patients with cancer ( N = 61) who reported their levels of financial strain and listed types of activities that they found most meaningful …
Psychometric properties of the assessment of Covid‐19 attitudes and behaviors
Developing psychometrically validated assessment tools to examine social and intergroup processes related to COVID‐19 is fundamental for creating interventions that reduce the spread of this virus. Thus, this manuscript aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a new measure, Assessment of COVID‐19 Attitudes and Behaviors (ACAB), that assesses COVID‐19‐related attitudes (e.g., about physical distancing, xenophobia), behaviors (e.g., helpin…
An Examination of Covid-19-Related Stressors among Parents
The circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have taken a psychological toll on parents. Thus, understanding the impact of these contextual stressors on parents is important to help inform the development of family-based health promotion interventions. The present study examined parents’ perception of various sources of stress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants (N = 294) completed an open-ended question about their primary source of…
The psychological impact of preexisting mental and physical health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially changed our daily lives, career trajectories, and sense of safety. Current research posits that younger adults without persisting health conditions may be at reduced risk for complications of COVID-19 infection. However, young adults are often in unstable places in their careers, education, and social lives, which may be more disrupted by policy changes than those of older adults. Thus, it is imperative to …
