  • Serving Youth with Disabilities and Mental Health Conditions

Open Access•Edward W Carter, Jason L Le Shana et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Religious Research•2026

Disabilities and mental health conditions are common among adolescents, yet little is known about how youth ministry leaders encounter and approach this population. We surveyed 184 Christian youth ministry leaders across 37 states regarding the presence of these youth within their congregations, as well as their confidence and feelings related to implementing inclusive ministry practices. Nearly all leaders reported the presence of youth with var…

  • The religious and spiritual beliefs and practices of mental health educators

Edward Polson, Holly Oxhandler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Spirituality in Mental…•2026

Currently, little is known about the religious and spiritual (RS) beliefs and practices of faculty in graduate mental health training programs. Here, we analyze data from a recent survey of 1,956 faculty in accredited counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work programs across the U.S. to provide the first national assessment of RS beliefs and practices of faculty in these disciplines. Results indicate that many hold RS b…

  • Revalidating the religious/spiritually integrated practice assessment scale for educators across four mental health disciplines

Holly Oxhandler, Edward Polson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Spirituality in Mental…•2025

This paper describes the validation of the Religious/Spiritually Integrated Practice Assessment Scale for Educators (RSIPAS-EDU) with a diverse sample of faculty in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, and psychology. Full-time faculty at accredited graduate schools across disciplines were invited to participate in an online survey that included the RSIPAS-EDU, and 1,742 completed it. Results support the RSIPAS-EDU as a reliable …

  • Is Mindfulness the Common Ground Between Mental Toughness and Self-Compassion in Student Athletes? A Cross-Sectional Study

Open Access•Zacharias Papadakis, Shana M Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Investigation…•2025

This study interrogates whether mental toughness (MT) and self-compassion (SC)—historically framed as oppositional constructs—can coexist synergistically among NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA collegiate athletes, with mindfulness as a hypothesized mediator. A cross-sectional survey of 396 participants (mean age: 19.8 yrs ± 1.9 SD; females: 51%), revealed a robust MT–SC correlation (r = 0.46), which attenuated to 0.31 when mindfulness was modeled,…

  • Collective leadership

    Open Access•Jon Eckert, Grant B Morgan•ARTICLE•Education Policy Analysis Archives•2023

Collective leadership of teachers and administrators can be a vehicle for catalyzing school improvement. In chemistry, a catalyst is any substance that increases the rate of reaction without itself being consumed. Leadership that accelerates good work without using up the leader is increasingly necessary. We identified schools that demonstrated exemplary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical (STEM) learning. Using a theoretical model…

  • Multilevel Latent Transition Mixture Modeling

    Open Access•Grant B Morgan, R Noah Padgett•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

Person-centered methodologies generally refer to those that take unobserved heterogeneity of populations into account. The use of person-centered methodologies has proliferated, which is likely due to a number of factors, such as methodological advances coupled with increased personal computing power and ease of software use. Using latent class analysis and its extension for longitudinal data, [latent transition analysis (LTA)], multiple underlyi…

  • Collapsing Categories is Often More Advantageous than Modeling Sparse Data

Christine Distefano, Dexin Shi et al.•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2021

When questionnaires include Likert scales, items endorsed by relatively few respondents may result from characteristics of examinees or the constructs under study. Researchers may collapse categories to increase cell sample size; however, effects of this practice have not been systematically investigated. A five-point ordinal scale was simulated where data included few responses in extreme categories. Different estimators were applied to sparsely…

  • Multilevel CFA with Ordered Categorical Data

    R Noah Padgett, Grant B Morgan•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2021

Within a multilevel confirmatory factor analysis framework, we investigated the ability of commonly used fit indices to discriminate between correctly specified models and misspecified models. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were used to evaluate the performance of fit indices. Combining ROC analyses with checks of the convergence rates across Monte Carlo replications and ANOVA for investigating the variation in fit scores acros…

  • Generating Nonnormal Distributions via Gaussian Mixture Models

    Grant B Morgan•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2020

The purpose of this paper is to (1) present a method of generating nonnormal univariate and/or uncorrelated multivariate distributions using mixture models, and (2) compare the accuracy of generating nonnormal distributions using the mixture-based method against power transformation method and generalized lambda method. Monte Carlo methods were used to generate data with each of the three nonnormal generation techniques to manipulate levels of sk…

  • The influence of time attitudes on adolescent alcohol use behaviours

    Michael T Mckay, Grant B Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2018

Time Perspective researchers are concerned with the way in which a combination of thoughts and feelings about the past, present and future influence behaviour. Time attitudes comprise a dimension of time perspective where the focus is narrowed to evaluative feelings about the three time periods. The present study included four waves of data gathered in the United Kingdom, and focused on time attitudes. Participants were adolescents in High school…

  • A National Analysis of Endowed Chairs and Distinguished Professors in the Field of Education

    Nicholas D Hartlep, Daisy Ball et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Studies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Noting a gap in the literature, this study examines how race, gender, and prestige are related to endowed and distinguished faculty of education. Specifically, this study seeks to ascertain the makeup of higher education with regard to faculty diversity: what processes are at work that serve to recreate the status quo in terms of faculty of higher education? Or, are higher education faculty members becoming more diverse as homogeneous cohorts ret…

Christine Distefano, Grant B Morgan•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2014

This study compared diagonal weighted least squares robust estimation techniques available in 2 popular statistical programs: diagonal weighted least squares (DWLS; LISREL version 8.80) and weighted least squares–mean (WLSM) and weighted least squares—mean and variance adjusted (WLSMV; Mplus version 6.11). A 20-item confirmatory factor analysis was estimated using item-level ordered categorical data. Three different nonnormality conditions were a…

  • Physical and social environmental characteristics of physical activity for Mexican-origin children

Open Access•M Renée Umstattd Meyer, Shana M Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

These results suggest a complex relationship between dimensions of economic hardship (employment status, household income, etc...) and perceived opportunities and barriers of children's physical activity engagement during the school-year and summer. In this study, both barriers and opportunities increased from school-year to summer, further demonstrating that interactions among these characteristics need to be better understood and addressed when…
