Regulating to Exclude or to Enable: Institution Building and Transnational Standard Adoption in Mexican Food Safety
A key challenge for integrating new transnational regulations into a semi-periphery country is creating institutional capacities for effective dissemination and monitoring of the standards and for upgrading a broad base of firms to implement and benefit from them. Instilled by NAFTA, Mexico embraced transnational food value chains, yet the results were rather mixed, as the vast majority of producers cannot implement new standards and participate.…
Integrating rule takers: Transnational integration regimes shaping institutional change in emerging market democracies
How does the transnationalization of markets shape institution building, particularly in those countries that have few options other than to incorporate the rules and norms promulgated by advanced industrialized countries? Building on recent advances in international and comparative political economy, we propose a framework for the comparative study of the ways in which transnational integration regimes (TIRs) shape the development of regulatory …
Innovation and the State: Political Choice and Strategies for Growth in Israel, Taiwan, and Ireland – By Dan Breznitz
Politics, power, and institution building: Bank crises and supervision in East Central Europe
Over the past 10–15 years the debate about the creation of economic governance institutions has shifted from an emphasis on the state rapidly implanting optimal incentives to a state capable of acting strategically and regulating. But how a government with little prior relevant skills or resources actually achieves the latter is still unclear. This article examines how different political approaches to transformation shape the creation of new ins…
The Politics of Institutional Renovation and Economic Upgrading: Recombining the Vines That Bind in Argentina
Through a comparative, longitudinal analysis of the wine industry in two Argentine provinces, this article finds that different political approaches to reform and not simply socioeconomic endowments determine the ability of societies to build new institutions for economic upgrading. A 'depoliticization' approach emphasizes the imposition of arm's-length incentives by a powerful, insulated government but exacerbates social fragmentation and impede…
Institutional Change and Firm Creation in East-Central Europe: An Embedded Politics Approach
A central debate about the transformation of postcommunist countries is how political approaches to institution building affect firm restructuring and creation. This debate has largely been dominated by theories that emphasize either the depoliticization of institutional designs or the determining impact of preexisting social structures. By examining the relative economic performance of Poland and the Czech Republic in the 1990s, this article off…
