  • Difference in timing of maximum flooding in two adjacent lowlands in the Tokyo area caused by the difference in sediment supply rate

Open Access•Junko Komatsubara, Yoshiro Ishihara et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Use of amphibole chemistry for detecting tephras in deep-sea sequences (Chikyu C9001C cores) and developing a middle Pleistocene tephrochronology for NE Japan

    Open Access•Tabito Matsu''Ura, Junko Komatsubara•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

Using amphibole crystals, we detected tephras in deep-sea sequences (Chikyu C9001C cores) and correlated marine and terrestrial tephras in NE Japan; then we reconsidered some previously reported tephra ages by using the age model of the cores. We identified 50 spikes in amphibole grains (numbered A1–A50 from top to bottom). Among these, 12 spikes (A38–49) corresponded to a thick, non-tephric sand layer. We selected 20 spikes containing amphibole …

  • Paleoecological evidence for coastal subsidence during five great earthquakes in the past 1500 years along the northern onshore continuation of the Nankai subduction zone

Open Access•Osamu Fujiwara, Shigehiro Fujino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Marine incursions of the past 1500 years and evidence of tsunamis at Suijin-numa, a coastal lake facing the Japan Trench

    Open Access•Yuki Sawai, Yushiro Fujii et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Sandy deposits of marine origin underlie the floor of Suijin-numa, a coastal lake midway along the subduction zone marked by the Japan Trench. The deposits form three units that are interbedded with lacustrine peat and mud above a foundation of marine, probably littoral sand. Unlike the lacustrine deposits, all three sandy units contain marine and brackish diatoms. The middle unit (B) contains, in addition, graded beds suggestive of multiple wave…

  • Rapid On-site Topographic Mapping with a Handheld Laser Range Finder for a Geoarchaeological Survey in Syria

    Open Access•Yuichi S Hayakawa, Takashi Oguchi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2007•References: 19

A digital elevation model and a topographic map of an archaeological site in Syria were created from a field topographic survey with a handheld laser range finder and data post-processing using a notebook personal computer with Geographical Information System software. The method enabled rapid on-site topographical mapping even under technical and political restrictions in the country. In an area of about 1 km2, coordinates of random points on th…
