An Educational Frontier: Hannah Breece and the American Colonial Project in Alaska
This article examines the role of Hannah Breece, a government schoolteacher in early 20th-century Alaska, as an agent of U.S. internal colonialism. Through an analysis of her experience in Alaska, this study explores how education functioned as a tool of assimilation, aiming to bring ‘modernity’ to indigenous and Russian-descended communities. Breece’s experiences illustrate the mechanisms of tailored migration, whereby specialized workers were d…
Una sombra colonial: Representaciones del oeste colonial americano a través de las postales ilustradas
This study investigates the role of picture postcards in perpetuating Orientalist and colonial narratives during European imperialism and U.S. westward expansion. Using Edward Saïd's concept of Orientalism and Homi Bhabha's theory of colonial stereotypes, it explores how these postcards functioned as tools of symbolic domination by portraying colonized peoples through reductive and static representations. In the American context, postcards of Nat…
A Literary Crossroads: Colonial Anxiety and Ecological Imperialism in The Tale of Saidjah and Adinda
This article examines the concepts of ecological anxiety and imperialism through the prism of colonial literature, with the aim of contextualising them alongside the broader theory of colonial anxiety. The study examines The Tale of Saidjah and Adinda, contained in Max Havelaar, as a case study. The text was investigated in order to identify key signifiers of anxiety, with the buffalo being the strongest signifier identified for discussion. The p…

Colonial Anxiety Through Literary Signifier
This article seeks to broaden the ongoing debate surrounding the nature and structure of colonial anxiety by incorporating elements of literary discussion into the conversation. It is a commonly experienced problem that the current definition of colonial anxiety is not mutable, and is often viewed as a singular indivisible whole. This, of course, cannot be the case due to the inherent links between anxiety generally, and its sub-set “colonial anx…
Divergent Destinies: The English Royal Colony of Tangier and the Island Settlement of Bombay, c. 1662-85
This article examines the progression of the two colonies which came to the English crown as a result of the Anglo-Portuguese marriage treaty of 1661, Tangier and Bombay. The years 1662-85 act as the border for this study, taking in the entire duration of Tangier’s existence as an English crown colony and Bombay’s emergence as a settlement of the East India Company. Whilst English Tangier was a noted failure in colonial terms, the long-term devel…
