The social-scientific sources of media and communication research
Media and communication research is both a latecomer to the social sciences and a product of political and economic necessities. Besides the “marriage of media research and polling technique” and its “roots in attitude psychology, market research, and the refinement of sampling methods”, the new paradigm’s concept of media and, its notion of science are of particular interest to a history of the social-scientific sources of media and communicatio…

Years communication study in Europe
Grounded in Giddens’ structuration theory and using Bourdieu’s analytical tools this paper argues that Karl Bücher’s launch of Europe’s first communication department at Leipzig University in 1916 had a structural impact on the discipline’s development across the continent, which goes far beyond content or citations. The evaluation of the literature on the field’s history reveals that Bücher was the starting point of the discipline’s isomorphic s…

Peer review revisited
This paper is about peer review in the German field of communication study. It focuses on the journal Studies in Communication | Media (SCM) and examines the role and function of reviews for the production of knowledge. Taking into account recent skepticism towards the peer review process, the study is based on the most important findings of the research on peer review and conceptualizes reviews as a core communication element within the field, w…
It is a crime to be abusive towards the president’
Using the case of the hybrid media system of Uganda and Schimank’s approach of agent-structure dynamics, this article argues that media freedom and journalists’ autonomy first and foremost depend on society’s expectations of the media system. Closely linked to those informal structures of expectations which are path and time dependent, journalists’ room for manoeuvre is limited by the resources allocated to individual and collective media actors.…

The totalitarian destruction of the public sphere?’ Newspapers and structures of public communication in socialist countries
Using the example of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), this study deals with the public sphere in Eastern European countries before 1989. It supports the thesis that even the ‘guided’ and controlled daily press enabled the readers (even in a limited way) to observe the process of communication and to make up their own minds. The article is based on two main sources: files from the Federal archives in Berlin and a series of 100 biograph…

Mass Media Logic and The Mediatization of Politics
This article proposes a theoretical framework for analyzing both mass media logic as a driving force for social change and, probably more importantly, that change itself as caused by the mass media. Mass media logic as a highly complex construct of interacting structures has changed society fundamentally, as actors in different social functional systems believe in first-order mass media effects and, therefore, adapt to the mass media logic. In th…

Service Providers, Sentinels, and Traders
This article presents a typology of role perceptions arrived at by a base of about 500 qualitative interviews conducted with German journalists from all branches of the media system. Between 2005 and 2008 German journalists were questioned about their careers, their working conditions, and their role perceptions. The present study uses the field theory of Bourdieu in order to examine the factors which influence the journalists’ role perceptions. …

Credibility of media offerings in centrally controlled media systems
Research on media use in authoritarian political systems supports the thesis that media offerings in such systems suffer from a low factor of credibility, leading to declining political interest within society, continuous retreat into the private sphere and heavy use of foreign media offerings in the search of trustworthy information. The literature indicates that both the political and centrally controlled media system have an impact on the comm…

Praxisorientierung als Überlebensstrategie
Based on Pierre Bourdieu's sociology, the paper reveals the academic and professional identity of Walter Hagemann, director of the Publizistik department at Mnster University and leading protagonist of German communication science after the Second World War. Extensive archive material, selected publications, and contemporary witnesses' information show that Hagemann, after a brilliant career as a journalist, reinvented the discredited national-so…

The role of external broadcasting in a closed political system
This article investigates the role and impact of external broadcasting (radio and television) on a closed political system, through the example of the two post-war German states: the West German Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the East German German Democratic Republic (GDR). The aim is to debunk myths about the influence of external broadcasting on the events that led to German reunification in 1990. The study follows a historical approach…

Communication Needs and Media Change
Using the case study of the introduction of television in East and West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s, this article discusses the correlation between the use of media and the development of society. What factors determine the changes in communication relationships and how do these changes affect society? The authors based their analysis on all available survey data from East and West Germany as well as the most important media services and a sys…

Journalists in the German Democratic Republic (Gdr)
The study explores the social background, career stations, working conditions and role-perceptions of journalists in East Germany before the wall came down. Drawing on Bourdieu's field theory as well as on interviews and memoirs, it uses 121 career paths to construct a collective biography of journalists. The findings show that journalism was, indeed, closely tied to the centre of power. The dominance of the first two generations of journalists w…
