The evolution of behaviourally informed policy-making in the EU
In the past decade, policy-making around the world has increased its attention to behavioural insights (BI). The European Commission (EC) identified this trend early on and has incorporated BI to its policy-making over several years. However, this experience has not been formally documented, or systematically analysed, from a policy studies perspective, leaving a large amount of experience-based knowledge on behavioural governance untapped. Our c…
Behavioural factors affecting the adoption of sustainable farming practices
This paper reviews the findings from the last 20 years on the behavioural factors that influence farmers’ decisions to adopt environmentally sustainable practices. It also proposes policy options to increase adoption, based on these behavioural factors and embedded in the EU Common Agricultural Policy. Behavioural factors are grouped into three clusters, from more distal to more proximal: (i) dispositional factors; (ii) social factors and (iii) c…
Applying the Model of Goal-Directed Behavior, Including Descriptive Norms, to Physical Activity Intentions
The theory of planned behavior (TPB) has received its fair share of criticism lately, including calls for it to retire. We contribute to improving the theory by testing extensions such as the model of goal-directed behavior (MGDB, which adds desire and anticipated positive and negative emotions) applied to physical activity (PA) intention. We also test the inclusion of a descriptive norms construct as an addition to the subjective norms construct…
The disconnection between privacy notices and information disclosure
We studied whether changes to the online environment, i.e. nudges, can lead to changes in privacy behaviour through an on-line experiment (n = 3229) across four European countries. The output measures were obtained through the answers to a questionnaire following a mock online exercise: one revealed the amount of personal information participants were willing to disclose, and the other whether they noticed a privacy policy link. The nudges appear…
Is anybody doing it? An experimental study of the effect of normative messages on intention to do physical activity
Normative messages affect intention, which is encouraging for public health campaigns. The effect of the positive message confirms previous findings on conformity to the norm; the effect of the negative message is unexpected and requires further research to be understood
Narrative and Systemic Modes of Economic Thinking
This paper concerns expert and lay economic thinking. A number of perspectives are reviewed, leading to a conceptualization which draws upon Habermas’s distinction between system and lifeworld and Bruner’s account of narrative and paradigmatic modes of thought. Qualitative empirical work conducted in Chile is analysed within a framework of systemic and narrative modes of economic thinking. Five aspects of lay and expert economic thought are ident…
