Scars of Conflict in the Population Structure of Iraqi Kurdistan: An Unfortunate Cohort and Its "Fortunate" Survivors
Using the 2017 Demographic Survey of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, older Iraqi censuses, the 2016 Census of Iran, and reports on displacement in Iraq, we expose the male deficit in the 1958-1962 birth cohort of Iraqi Kurdistan over time, probe its origins, and illustrate its effects on the rest of the population while relating these to the historical context of the exodus of the Kurdish resistance in Iraq to Iran in 1975. House Damage Revisited: How Type of Damage and Perpetrating Actor Affect Intentions and Actions of IDP s in Iraq
House damage has been a widespread consequence of the Islamic State ( IS ) crisis in Iraq. However, house and property damage per se is not a factor limiting return. Iraqi IDP s Access to Durable Solutions: Results of Two Rounds of a Longitudinal Study
This article discusses the findings from a 4,000 household, longitudinal study conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Georgetown University. Using the Inter‐Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Framework on Durable Solutions, we investigate the circumstances in which households were displaced, and how their needs, strategies, and access to durable solutions change over time as they integrate, return, or settle elsewhere. …
Language shift among Kurds in Turkey: A spatial and demographic analysis
This study explores language shift and interregional migration among Turkey’s Kurdish-origin population using census data as well as TDHS data. First, the geographical retraction of the Kurdish language between 1945 and 1965 is depicted using respective censuses as data sources. Second, patterns of intergenerational language shift and the effects of migration and education on this shift are elaborated utilising 2003 TDHS data and the 2000 Census …
Inter-regional Migration and Intermarriage among Kurds in Turkey
This study examines interregional migration and intermarriage of internal migrant Kurds in Turkey using the latest available census data. Unlike many other studies, birth region is used as a proxy of ethnicity due to the apparent language shift among the Kurds in Turkey. To ensure comparability, only regions where both Turkish and Kurdish populations co-exist are selected for analysis of intermarriage. Analysis of language shift is based on the 2…
