  • School segregation, student achievement, and educational attainment in Hungary

    Open Access•Zoltán Hermann, D Kisfalusi•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026•Cited by: 2•References: 65

Using large-scale administrative data from Hungary, we examine the effects of attending a high-poverty school in Grade 8 on academic achievement and later educational attainment, using a matching approach. We find that attending a high-poverty school is negatively associated with reading scores and secondary education attainment, while there is no significant association with math scores. Estimates are negative in the case of higher education enr…

  • Social Networks in Early Adolescence: Introduction to the Special Issue

Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Károly Takács•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2025•References: 22

Peer relations are increasingly important during early adolescence. Early adolescents spend considerable time among same-age others in school and during extracurricular activities. In these contexts, collective norms emerge, which guide behavior and determine how individuals can gain status and peer acceptance. Social networks shape young people’s attitudes, behavior, and identity development, while behavior and norms influence the dynamics of pe…

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Zoltán Hermann et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 52

This study examines discrimination in teacher assessments and track recommendations against Roma minority students in Hungary. We conducted a pre-registered randomized experiment among 413 primary school teachers. Participating teachers evaluated six mathematics or literacy and grammar tests with fictitious, randomized student names and recommended a high school track. Our results show mixed evidence for discrimination against Roma students: teac…

  • Are separate classrooms inherently unequal? The effect of within-school sorting on the socioeconomic test score gap in Hungary

Open Access•Zoltán Hermann, Hedvig Horváth et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2024

This study investigates whether within-school sorting increases socioeconomic test score inequalities. Using universal test score data on 6 th - and 8 th -grade students in Hungary, we document the extent of within-school sorting in an institutional context where sorting based on ability or prior achievement is rare. We identify sorting schools as schools that systematically assign students with low and high socioeconomic status into different cl…

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi•ARTICLE•Journal for Multicultural Education•2023•References: 6

Purpose Teachers’ ability attributions play an important role in students’ educational outcomes. Perceptions of academic abilities, however, are subject to biases. This study aims to examine ethnic biases in homeroom teachers’ ability attributions in Hungarian primary schools. Design/methodology/approach Using a unique database combining survey data collected among teachers with administrative data on students’ standardised test scores, the autho…

  • Roma students’ academic self-assessment and educational aspirations in Hungarian primary schools

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 69

Using a unique database from Hungarian primary schools, this study investigates whether academic self-assessment and educational aspirations differ between Roma minority and non-Roma majority students with similar cognitive skills and abilities. I find that Roma students have lower self-assessment, on average, than their non-Roma classmates with similar competences. In addition, although there are no ethnic differences in educational aspirations …

  • How dislike and bullying co‐develop: A longitudinal study of negative relationships among children

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Marianne Hooijsma et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 14

This study investigates the network mechanisms underlying the co‐development of two types of negative relationships: dislike relationships, and victim‐bully relationships among children. Longitudinal data on school‐level networks of 15 Dutch primary schools ( N = 2175; M age (T1) = 10; 51% male) were analyzed with stochastic actor‐oriented models. Evidence was found for mutual reinforcement between dislike and bullying/victimization. Disliked chi…

  • More than one's negative ties: The role of friends' antipathies in high school gossip

    Open Access•José Luis Estévez, D Kisfalusi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 91

Gossip is universal, and multiple studies have demonstrated that it can have beneficial group-level outcomes when negative reports help identify defectors or norm-violators. Gossip, however, seldom happens in a social vacuum. Instead, it is enmeshed in a fabric of positive and negative relationships that creates opportunities, constraints, and also motives to gossip. This article studies the importance of friendships and antipathies among the thr…

  • Crossing ethnic boundaries? A social network investigation of defending relationships in schools

    Open Access•Marianne Hooijsma, D Kisfalusi et al.•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 31

Prosocial peer relationships, such as defending against victimization, are beneficial for integration. Using the concept of multiple categorization, this study considers the extent to which similarity in gender, being in the same classroom, and similarity in network position regarding bullying or victimization contributes to the formation of cross-ethnic defending relationships among children. Longitudinal social network models were applied to co…

  • Political homophily in cultural reputational networks

    Open Access•Luca Kristóf, D Kisfalusi et al.•ARTICLE•Poetics•2021•References: 65

The cultural field is characterised by constant struggles for recognition, because resource allocation depends on the reputation of cultural actors. Using a logistic regression quadratic assignment procedure (LRQAP), we first identify the existence and pattern of political homophily in the distribution of cultural reputation. Then, we use interview data to reveal the potential mechanisms that underlie the association between political homophily a…

  • Grading in Hungarian Primary Schools: Mechanisms of Ethnic Discrimination against Roma Students

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Béla Janky et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 73

The present study aims to shed light on the mechanisms of ethnic discrimination in teacher assessments in Hungarian primary schools. For this purpose, we use data collected among Roma minority and non-Roma majority students. First, we identify a considerable ethnic difference in non-blind school grades, which is beyond the ethnic difference in blind standardized test scores. Then, we derive and empirically test predictions from different theories…

  • A pletyka és a reputáció összefüggései középiskolai osztályközösségekben

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Károly Takács•ARTICLE•Szociológiai Szemle•2018

A kamaszok körében tapasztalható intenzív státuszverseny egyik gyakori velejárója a pletykálkodás, amit a fiatalok gyakran használnak eszközként a csoporton belüli magasabb státusz elérésére. Ha valakiről sok negatív pletyka terjed, az előbb vagy utóbb veszít megbecsültségéből. Az alacsony megbecsültséggel rendelkező kamaszokról továbbá egyre több negatív pletyka terjedhet el. Ugyanakkor a gyakori pletykálás is vezethet alacsonyabb megbecsültségh…

  • Az exponenciális random gráf modellek bemutatása: Egy iskolai osztály baráti hálózatának modellezése

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi•ARTICLE•Szociológiai Szemle•2018

    Open Access•D Kisfalusi•ARTICLE•Corvinus Journal of Sociology and…•2018•References: 9

This study focuses on ethnic classification among secondary school teachers and Roma and non-Roma Hungarian secondary school students. It is expected that students living under better socio-economic circumstances are less likely to be classified as Roma by their classmates and teachers than students with a poorer socio-economic background. It is also assumed that students having more Roma friends are more likely to be classified as Roma than stud…

  • Double Standards or Social Identity? The Role of Gender and Ethnicity in Ability Perceptions in the Classroom

Open Access•D Kisfalusi, Béla Janky et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 27

This study aims at disentangling the effects of status generalization and social identity processes on ability perceptions among early adolescents. Double standards theory predicts that people use different standards for making inferences about others’ abilities based on social status. Social identity processes, however, imply that people evaluate in-group members more positively than out-group members. We analyze cross-sectional dyadic peer nomi…

In this paper I compare the quality of inter- and intra-ethnic friendships. Findings of previous studies suggest that interethnic friendships are less likely to be characterized by closeness and intimacy than friendships among same-ethnic peers. I analyze data of a Hungarian panel study conducted among Roma and non-Roma Hungarian secondary school students. Descriptive analysis of 13 classes shows that interethnic friendships are indeed less often…
