Multicollinearity and Measurement Error in Structural Equation Models
The literature on structural equation models is unclear on whether and when multicollinearity may pose problems in theory testing (Type II errors). Two Monte Carlo simulation experiments show that multicollinearity can cause problems under certain conditions, specifically: (1) when multicollinearity is extreme, Type II error rates are generally unacceptably high (over 80%), (2) when multicollinearity is between 0.6 and 0.8, Type II error rates ca…
The Exercise of Interfirm Power and Its Repercussions in U. S.-Japanese Channel Relationships

Measurement Issues Concerning the Use of Inventories of Job Satisfaction
In spite of the fact that the JDI is one of the most widely used measures in the organizational sciences, there has been relatively little validation work done since Smith, Kendall, and Hulin's (1969) development of the JDI. This paper is an examination of the psychometric characteristics of the JDI and other inventories of job satisfaction across a sample of validation studies. Like most other measures in the behavioral sciences, the construct v…
Assessing the Influence of Journal of Consumer Research
This article employs citation analysis to investigate empirically the influence of the Journal of Consumer Research (JCR) on the social science literature. Some 7,166 citations from the Social Science Citation Index (1974–1989) were made to 537 articles published in JCR between 1974 and 1986. The results show that most research appearing in JCR is used and that research in the journal has an influence on other disciplines. Consumer research, mark…
Interrelationships of Work Commitment Constructs
Bivariate correlations have typified research on interrelationships of work commitment constructs. A model of work commitment is presented which specifies multivariate relationships among organizational commitment, career salience, work group attachment, job involvement, and the Protestant work ethic. Data from a sample of university employees reveal that multivariate findings are generally consistent with reported bivariate correlations. While f…
Measurement Errors in the Behavioral Sciences
It has been established that construct measures often contain measurement error and method effects. However, the extent of these measurement problems and their effects on personality constructs has not been fully examined. In this study, an analysis of published data sets affords estimates of the amount of trait, method, and error variance of measures used in the social/behavioral sciences. It was found that traits accounted for less than 50 perc…
Lack of method variance in self-reported affect and perceptions at work
Une reanalyse factorielle des donnees de Spector (1987) met a l'epreuve la validite de sa conclusion critique par rapport a la realite des variances des methodes dans un type de recherche sur les organisations

Estimating Trait, Method, and Error Variance
The authors examine the construct validation results of 70 published data sets. The analysis shows that, on average, traits account for less than 50% of the variance in construct measures. These findings raise questions about the application of statistical techniques that assume minimal measurement error or do not properly model systematic measurement error.
Effects of Unexpected Situations on Behavior-Intention Differences
This study explores the usefulness of unanticipated situational occurrences for explaining the disparity between stated intention and actual behavior for 15 commonly consumed food and beverage products. Unlike previous research on unexpected situations, actual situational occurrences were monitored for effects on actual consumption (measured by garbage analysis and self-report). The results show that behavior-intention inconsistency is partly att…
