Mythologies of Wealth in Platform Economies
This article reactivates the concept of myth—which is well-developed in social science literature—to study digital technologies and platform economies. It conceptualizes platform economies as spaces full of myths and mythmaking. Elaborated through an ethnographic study of the Chinese ride-hailing platform Didi, we show how mythologies, with past-oriented story structures, help individuals who do not necessarily have technical expertise make sense…
The Rise in Cesarean Births and the Technocratic Medicalization of Childbirth in Late-Reform China
The surge in cesarean section (CS) deliveries in China over the past several decades has led to significant international discussion, yet critical social science inquiry remains limited. Drawing on insights from sociological and anthropological studies of childbirth, this article moves away from the premise that having a CS is a matter of individual choice. Instead, we treat childbirth as ground zero of a set of complex negotiations between multi…

Fertility Decline in Rural China
Many models have been proposed to explain both the rapidity of China’s fertility decline after the 1960s and the differential timing of the decline in different places. In particular, scholars argue over whether deliberate policies of fertility control, institutional changes, or general modernization factors contribute most to changes in fertility behavior. Here the authors adopt an ethnographically grounded behavioral—institutional approach to a…
On 'same-year siblings' in rural South China
This article draws attention to a little-known Chinese idiom and institution of close relatedness between non-kin persons of the same sex. Instead of focusing primarily on the ideology of fictive/ritual kinship behind it, the article proceeds from the ego-centred perspective of the practical/affective phenomenon that leads to its strategic deployment in the first place. This shift of focus to friendship opens the way for the presentation of data …
