  • Minimal Evidence of Inflammaging in Naturalistic Chimpanzee Populations

    Open Access•Megan F Cole, M E Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Biological…•2026

  • A Comparison of Chimpanzee Density Estimators in Southern Congo

Open Access•Enrique VillaMarin, Marc Fourrier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2026

Chimpanzee populations have declined severely in recent decades because of habitat loss and illegal hunting, emphasizing the need to monitor population density to support conservation. Since 1992, the Jane Goodall Institute has led chimpanzee conservation efforts in the Republic of Congo through the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center and, more recently, the Tchimpounga Nature Reserve (TNR), in partnership with the Ministry of Forest Eco…

  • Flexible information-seeking in chimpanzees

Open Access•Alexandra G Rosati, Elisa Felsche et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2024

  • Viruses in sanctuary chimpanzees across Africa

Open Access•Emily Dunay, Leah A Owens et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2023

Infectious disease is a major concern for both wild and captive primate populations. Primate sanctuaries in Africa provide critical protection to thousands of wild‐born, orphan primates confiscated from the bushmeat and pet trades. However, uncertainty about the infectious agents these individuals potentially harbor has important implications for their individual care and long‐term conservation strategies. We used metagenomic next‐generation sequ…

  • Commentary

Open Access•Debby Cox, Lilian Pintea et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

Conservation groups are always challenged with assigning limited resources to interventions they assume will have the most effective impact in addressing threats to their conservation targets. These decisions are often made based on experience and perceived outcomes, rather than evidence. In the past decade, multiple public awareness and proactive law enforcement activities have been initiated in the Congo Republic to address the illegal wildlife…

  • Significant differentiation in the apolipoprotein(a)/lipoprotein(a) trait between chimpanzees from Western and Central Africa

Open Access•Asma Noureen, Claudius Ronke et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

Elevated Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) plasma concentrations are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in humans, largely controlled by the LPA gene encoding apolipoprotein(a) (apo(a)). Lp(a) is composed of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and apo(a) and restricted to Catarrhini. A variable number of kringle IV (KIV) domains in LPA lead to a size polymorphism of apo(a) that is inversely correlated with Lp(a) concentrations. Smaller apo(a) isoforms and h…
