"Defining "Community: Perceptions of East African and Southeast Asian Immigrant and Refugee Youths Residing in Public Housing Sites
Given the complexities inherent in defining “community,” we undertook an exploratory study of perceptions of “community” among immigrant and refugee youth. A multidisciplinary team of investigators carried out focus groups in three Seattle Public Housing sites with 39 teenagers, boys and girls, aged 12 to 17. This article presents new conceptualizations of war rape in international law and defines rape as a weapon and strategy of war. It also outlines the intersections of gender, patriarchy, militarism, and ethnic, religious, and political identities that fuel war rape as part of a continuum of violence against women. The experience of Eritrean young people in dealing with war‐related traumatic events is a complex phenomenon, as indicated in this qualitative study of refugee youth returning to their homeland from exile in Sudan.
