Personality functioning in treatment-referred youth
Introduction: Previous research investigated the interplay between impairments in personality functioning and perceived negative interactions with parents. Those studies mostly utilized cross-sectional methodologies in community samples. This study aimed to clarify the direction of associations between impaired personality functioning (i.e., difficulties in identity formation and less capacity of empathy and intimacy) and perceived negative inter…
The Mediating Role of Interpersonal Relationships in the Link Between Maladaptive Personality Traits and Quality of Life in Referred Youth
Youth with maladaptive personality traits often experience diminished quality of life (QoL) as well as difficulties in interpersonal relationships. The present study aims to investigate the mediating role of perceived social support and conflicts with parents in the link between maladaptive personality traits and QoL. The sample consists of 110 youth referred to outpatient treatment (M age = 21.3 years; range age = 16-29 years) from a mental heal…
Dispositional Gratitude Trajectories of Syrian Origin Young Adults in the Netherlands
Despite many challenges of resettling in a host country, people with refugee backgrounds can experience positive changes. We examined changes in dispositional gratitude across 13 months in 168 Syrian origin young adults who were resettling in the Netherlands. Latent class growth analysis revealed three trajectories: moderate-stable (44%), low-decreasing (42%), and high-decreasing (14%). Multinomial logistic regression analyses showed that more tr…
A Person × Environment approach to Borderline Personality Disorder features in young people
Introduction: This study aimed at examining the concurrent associations between stressful life events and borderline personality disorder (BPD) features in a clinical sample of young people. The moderating role of parental support and self-esteem was investigated (i.e., stress buffering). In a subsample, short term changes in BPD features were examined at a 6-month follow-up. Method: The total sample consisted of 318 young people (ages 12-26). Re…
Distal‐to‐proximal etiologically relevant variables associated with the general ( p ) and specific factors of psychopathology
BACKGROUND: The general factor of psychopathology, often denoted as p, captures the common variance among a broad range of psychiatric symptoms. Specific factors are co-modeled based on subsets of closely related symptoms. This paper investigated the extent to which wide-ranging genetic, personal, and environmental etiologically relevant variables are associated with p and specific psychopathology factors. METHODS: Using data from four waves (age…
Unravelling the Longitudinal Relations Between Developmental Milestones, General Psychopathology, and Personality Functioning in a Youth Clinical Sample
Personality functioning, general psychopathology, and developmental milestones achievement are critical domains in the field of young people’s mental health; however, no prior research has considered these variables jointly or examined the temporal dynamics between them. To fill these gaps, the present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal associations between the above constructs in a clinical sample of Dutch youth. 525 outpatients (72.5% …
Youth Perceived Social Support and Symptom Distress
Although social support and mental health associations have been extensively investigated, their reciprocal relations in vulnerable youth remain understudied. This study investigated the relations between perceived social support and symptom distress over time whilst differentiating between support from caregivers and significant others. The sample included 257 youth (79% self-identified women , M age = 19.2, SD = 2.5) who were receiving mental h…
The Cambridge Handbook of the Development of Coping
Despite broad interest in how children and youth cope with stress and how others can support their coping, this is the first Handbook to consolidate the many theories and large bodies of research that contribute to the study of the development of coping. The Handbook's goal is field building - it brings together theory and research from across the spectrum of psychological, developmental, and related sciences to inform our understanding of coping…
Valenced dual tasking in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder
We did not find evidence for a benefit of adding positive valence to a dual-task procedure in PTSD patients. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
The relation between self‐event connections and personality functioning in youth with severe psychopathology
OBJECTIVE: One way in which individuals construct their narrative identity is by making self-event connections, which are often linked to better functioning. Being unable to make connections is related to identity discontinuity and psychopathology. Work in the general population corroborates this association, but also highlights the importance of focusing on specific aspects of these connections and on vulnerable populations. METHOD: = 19.5, long…
Post‐traumatic growth as positive personality change
OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic growth typically refers to enduring positive psychological change experienced as a result of adversity, trauma, or highly challenging life circumstances. Critics have challenged insights from much of the prior research on this topic, pinpointing its significant methodological limitations. In response to these critiques, we propose that post-traumatic growth can be more accurately captured in terms of personality change-a…
Linking Stressful Experiences and Psychological Problems
Stressful experiences have repeatedly been related to psychological problems. The current study extends previous work on stress and psychological problems by examining the link between stressful experiences and both internalizing (INT) and externalizing (EXT) problems. Additionally, individual differences are investigated by testing the moderating role of self-esteem. Questionnaire data of 750 adolescents aged 12–18 were collected and analyzed us…
The greener the better? Does neighborhood greenness buffer the effects of stressful life events on externalizing behavior in late adolescence
We tested whether neighborhood greenness is a promotive and/or a protective factor in the development of adolescent externalizing behavior problems and explored a possible mechanism of its effects via respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) recovery after stress. Data from a longitudinal multi-method study on adolescents (N = 715) was used. Result showed that neighborhood greenness was neither a promotive nor a protective factor. However, adolescents …
Longitudinal Pathways From Shyness in Early Childhood to Personality in Adolescence
Temperamental shyness in childhood is theorized to be an important contributor for adolescent personality. However, empirical evidence for such pathways is scarce. Using longitudinal data (N = 939 children, 51% boys) across 17 years, the aim of this study was to examine how shyness development throughout childhood predicted personality traits in adolescence, and the role of peers in these associations. Results from piecewise latent growth curve m…
The role of autonomy–connectedness in the relation between childhood stressful life events, current posttraumatic symptoms, and internalizing psychopathology in adulthood
Deficits in AC, particularly regarding Self-Awareness and Capacity for Managing New Situations, may represent a vulnerability factor for developing trauma-related psychopathology. Enhancing AC may be a beneficial treatment approach for trauma-related psychopathology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
Adolescent Personality
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the associations between personality facets and hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal ( HPA ) axis functioning. Previous studies have mainly focussed on stress‐induced HPA ‐axis activation. We hypothesized that other characteristics of HPA ‐axis functioning would have a stronger association with personality based on the neuroendocrine literature. Data ( n = 343) were used from the TR acking A dolescent…
