Comparison of Responses by Normal and Deviant Populations to Louisville Behavior Checklist
Clinical assessment has been presented in the literature as involving extensive time and resources. Unfortunately, the realities of a comprehensive mental health clinic and private practice typically require well-focused, relatively short-term interventions, which in turn dictate that the assessment be brief and assist in the identification of the target problems as early as possible. This study provided an extension of previous standardization o…

Contrafreeloading in Humans
Four studies are reported which examine the free vs earned reward phenomenon in humans. The 308 subjects were distributed over all grade-levels from preschool through college. Candies and coins were used as rewards. The California Psychological Inventory was administered to the college students. In all experiments, subjects had the choice of obtaining rewards one at a time, either by pushing a lever or freely from a filled dish. There was a prefe…

An Objective Method for the Spectrographic Analysis of Sounds
A manual technique for rapidly and accurately scoring sound spectrograms is presented. The method allows for objective phonetic description and evaluation without the aid of either a highly-trained scorer or complex processing equipment. Empirical evidence using the technique is presented
Random Strategies and Sex Differences in the Prisoner's Dilemma Game
Forty-eight male and 48 female subjects were randomly assigned to same-sex or mixed-sex simulated other dyads and played a reiterated Prisoner's Dilemma game consisting of 10 trials at either 80% cooperative or 20% cooperative, randomly programmed, followed by 50 trials of within trial tit-for-tat. Significant differences were found for trial blocks (p <.001), trial blocks by sex of partner (p <.01), trial blocks by pretreatment (p <.05), and tri…
Phonetic Symbolism in Adult Native Speakers of Czech
10 monolingual adult speakers of Czech were asked to label elliptical and triangular figures of different size with phonetic nonsense syllables. The purpose of the study was to obtain evidence in support of the "phonetic symbolism " hypothesis, and to attempt to replicate the findings of Tarte and Barritt (1971) with English speakers. Subjects agreed about the relationship between vowel sounds and the size and shape of figures, both between thems…
Phonetic Symbolism in Adult Native Speakers of English
Three studies using adult native speakers of English are reported. Each study asked subjects to label elliptical or triangular figures of different size with a CVC trigram. It was the purpose of these studies to obtain evidence in support of the " phonetic symbolism " hypothesis. Subjects agreed about the relationship between vowel sounds and the size of figure regardless of shape. The sound /a/ was more often chosen for large figures while /i/ w…
