  • Parental bonds, attachment anxiety, media susceptibility, and body dissatisfaction

    Sarah C Patton, A Alexander Beaujean et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2014•Cited by: 1

The developmental trajectory of body image dissatisfaction is unclear. Researchers have investigated sociocultural and developmental risk factors; however, the literature needs an integrative etiological model. In 2009, Cheng and Mallinckrodt proposed a dual mediation model, positing that poor-quality parental bonds, via the mechanisms of heightening romantic attachment anxiety and thin-ideal media internalization, increases body dissatisfaction.…

  • Virgin Or Vamp

    Helen Benedict•BOOK•Virgin or vamp•1992

Sex-related crimes such as rape and rape-murder are popular fodder for the print press. They lend themselves to huge, racy headlines (as in the recent trial of William Kennedy Smith), and they sell papers. Yet little attention has been paid to how the print press tends to cover such crimes. This book examines recent cases and exposes the myths and assumptions of the press. The author has interviewed reporters who covered the trials, questioning t…

  • The relationship of pragmatic dimensions of mothers' speech to the referential-expressive distinction

Open Access•Maria Della Corte, Helen Benedict et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1983

A 50-utterance corpus for each of sixteen mothers during caretaking situations (diapering, dressing, bathing) was extracted from in-home tape recordings obtained over a three-day period. The children ranged from 1; 3.15 to 1; 7 and were classified according to Nelson's referential-expressive distinction. A coding scheme consisting of three categories – communicative intent, focus of attention and evaluation – was employed to characterize the moth…

  • Mothers' speech to children and syntactic development

Open Access•David Furrow, Katherine Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1979

This study investigated the relationships between children's linguistic environments and their language acquisition. Speech samples taken from seven firstborn children and their mothers when the children were 1; 6 and 2; 3 were analysed within a number of semantic and syntactic categories to determine correlations between mothers' speech and subsequent language development. Several characteristics of mothers' speech (e.g. utterance length, use of…

  • Early lexical development

    Open Access•Helen Benedict•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1979

Lists of the first 50 words comprehended and produced by eight infants between 0; 9 and 1; 8 were compared. Comprehension development began earlier (around 0; 9) and reached the 50-word level (age 1; 1) earlier than production development (ages 1; 0 and 1; 6 respectively) and rate of word acquisition for comprehension was twice that of production, confirming the hypothesis that comprehension precedes production for lexical development. Word-class…
