  • What makes a word a good representative of the category of “emotion”? The role of feelings and interoception

Pilar Ferré, Marc Guasch et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2023

The words we use to describe emotions vary in terms of prototypicality; that is, some of these words may be more representative of the semantic category of emotion than others (e.g., anger refers more clearly to an emotion than boredom ). Based on a multicomponential conception of emotions, the aim of the present study was to examine the contribution of several variables to emotion prototypicality. Some of those variables are related to the disti…

  • Love me in L1, but hate me in L2

Open Access•Pilar Ferré, Marc Guasch et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2022

This study examines the distinction between knowing the meaning of a word and experiencing the feelings associated with it. We collected affective ratings for a set of emotional and neutral English words from a group of English native speakers and a group of European Portuguese–English bilinguals. Half of the emotional words named emotions (emotion words) and the other half did not name emotions but could provoke them (emotion-laden words). Some …

  • On the grammaticality of passivization in bilingual compound verbs

    Open Access•Osmer Balam, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Objectives/research questions: We examined stative and eventive passive bilingual compound verbs (BCVs) in Spanish/English code-switching. Of particular interest to us was the availability of passivization in bilingual eventive passive hacer “do” constructions, purportedly banned in bilingual speech due to a universal syntactic restriction. Methodology: A total of 119 bilinguals from Northern Belize and 36 from Southwest United States completed a…

  • Él Code-Switches More Than tú y yo

    Open Access•Kate Bellamy, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

In early studies, code-switches between a subject pronoun and a finite verb were considered highly dispreferred or even impossible. However, naturalistic data from several language pairs has since highlighted that such switches are possible, although their grammaticality is constrained by the typology of the pronouns involved. In this study, we test the switching constraints postulated for subject pronouns-verbs among P'urhepecha-Spanish bilingua…

  • Bilingual verbs in three Spanish/English code-switching communities

    Open Access•Osmer Balam, Marie-Paule Couto et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Objectives/research questions: We investigate two understudied bilingual compound verbs that have been attested in Spanish/English code-switching; namely, ‘ hacer + V Inf ’ and ‘ estar + V Prog ’. Specifically, we examined speakers’ intuitions vis-à-vis the acceptability and preferential use of non-canonical and canonical hacer ‘to do’ or estar ‘to be’ bilingual constructions among bilinguals from Northern Belize, New Mexico and Puerto Rico. Meth…

  • Eye tracking investigation into semantic convergence in fully fluent Spanish–English bilingual adults

    Open Access•Virginia C Mueller Gathercole, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Aims and Objectives: This article examines semantic convergence of bilinguals’ two languages in the case of words that overlap semantically but are not fully isomorphic in meaning and application. To what extent do the type of bilingual, type of category, and relative semantic width across the languages matter? Design: The primary method involves eye tracking while participants chose pictures corresponding to an English word heard. The data exami…

  • Testing alternative theoretical accounts of code-switching

    Open Access•Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez, Marie-Paule Couto et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Objectives: Spanish and English contrast in adjective–noun word order: for example, brown dress (English) vs. vestido marrón (‘dress brown’, Spanish). According to the Matrix Language model ( MLF) word order in code-switched sentences must be compatible with the word order of the matrix language, but working within the minimalist program (MP), Cantone and MacSwan arrived at the descriptive generalization that the position of the noun phrase relat…

  • El book or the libro ? Insights from acceptability judgments into determiner/noun code-switches

Open Access•Marie-Paule Couto, Maria Carmen Parafita Couto et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Objectives/research questions: We used two types of acceptability judgments to experimentally test the predictions of two theoretical models of code-switching regarding the surface realization of the determiner in nominal constructions: lexicalist approaches within the Minimalist Program (MP) versus the Bilingual NP Hypothesis within the Matrix Language Frame Model (MLF). Methodology: Two separate groups of 40 early Spanish-English bilinguals eva…

  • WHODUNNIT? Language interaction in identification of sentential subjects in Wales and Patagonia

Virginia C Mueller Gathercole, Rocío Pérez-Tattam et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

This study examined Spanish-Welsh (in Patagonia) and Welsh-English (in North Wales) bilingual children’s and adults’ processing of sentences in which two noun phrases acted as arguments of a verb. The goal was to determine the relative importance of distinct cues to the identification of the subject in the bilinguals’ processing of their two languages, and to explore possible crosslinguistic influence between their two languages. We provided spea…

  • Gender Assignment to Spanish Pseudowords by Monolingual and Basque-Spanish Bilingual Children

    Open Access•Rocío Pérez-Tattam, María José Ezeizabarrena et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 23

This study examines gender marking in the Spanish of Basque-Spanish bilingual children. We analyze data collected via a production task designed to elicit 48 DPs, controlling for gender of referents and for number and types of morphological cues to grammatical gender. The goals were to determine the extent to which participants rely on biological cues (female referent =>FEM gender, male referent =>MASC gender) and morpho-phonological cues (-a end…

  • Using two-alternative forced choice tasks and Thurstone’s law of comparative judgments for code-switching research

    Open Access•Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez, Luis López et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Approaches to…•2018

This article argues that 2-alternative forced choice tasks and Thurstone’s law of comparative judgments ( Thurstone, 1927 ) are well suited to investigate code-switching competence by means of acceptability judgments. We compare this method with commonly used Likert scale judgments and find that the 2-alternative forced choice task provides granular details that remain invisible in a Likert scale experiment. In order to compare and contrast both …

  • Investigating Gender Assignment Strategies in Mixed Purepecha-Spanish Nominal Constructions

    Open Access•Kate Bellamy, Marie-Paule Couto et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2018•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 20

Purepecha has no grammatical gender, whereas Spanish has a binary masculine-feminine system. In this paper we investigate how early sequential Purepecha-Spanish bilinguals assign gender to Purepecha nouns inserted into an otherwise Spanish utterance, using a director-matcher production task and an online forced-choice acceptability judgement task. The results of the production task indicate a strong preference for masculine gender, irrespective o…

  • Semantic and conceptual factors in Spanish–English bilinguals’ processing of lexical categories in their two languages

    Open Access•Virginia C Mueller Gathercole, Hans Stadthagen-Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

This study examines possible semantic interaction in fully fluent adult simultaneous and early second language (L2) bilinguals. Monolingual and bilingual speakers of Spanish and English ( n = 144) were tested for their understanding of lexical categories that differed in their two languages. Simultaneous bilinguals came from homes in which Spanish or Spanish and English were spoken when they were children, and L2 bilinguals entered the US as chil…
