Die Rolle von Temporalität, Aspektualität und Modalität in den italienischen Übersetzungsäquivalenten vom deutschen schon
This paper addresses the question of how the highly abstract and multifunctional German particle schon can be grasped and translated into Italian. Building upon previous research, an account of the semantics of schon is proposed and put into relation with the functional equivalents detected in parallel corpora. The core idea of the contribution is that Italian expresses the complex modality conveyed by schon through modal means such as modal adve…
A modal account of syntactically non-integrated von wegen in contemporary German
This study aims to account for the German expression von wegen (literally ‘of ways’) when used outside of the sentence structure. Drawing on corpus data for written and spoken German, we show that there are two types of syntactically non-integrated von wegen : (i) illustrating/exemplifying von wegen and, (ii) opposing von wegen . By combining both a formal and a functional perspective, we claim that these two types can be analyzed as modal expres…
The Syntax-Pragmatics Interface in Heritage Languages
This paper deals with the use of anche ("also") by German heritage speakers of Italian ("IHSs"). Previous research showed that anche and its German counterpart auch share many features but also display language-specific characteristics. According to previous research on bilingualism, heritage speakers show cross-linguistic influence ("CLI") when a linguistic phenomenon is at the syntax-pragmatics interface and there is a partial overlap in the tw…
Deutsches auch und italienisches anche im Vergleich
The focus of our contribution is the German particle auch ‘also’ and its Italian counterpart anche. From a semantic point of view, auch and anche convey the same additive meaning in both languages: through them an element, called ‘domain of association’, is added to a list of further elements for which the auch/anche phrase applies. From a syntactical point of view, auch and anche can occupy different positions in the sentence by modifying the ty…
Topiks im Deutschen und Italienischen
The aim of this paper is i) to investigate the distribution of different topic types in the highest portion (found above valutative adverbs such as glücklicherweise and leider, Cinque 1999) of the German Mittelfeld, i. e. the clause portion found between the finite and non-finite verb forms (Satzklammer), and ii) to compare it with the distribution of topics within the Italian left periphery, i. e. the area found above the finite verb where opera…
Intonation und Bedeutung
The rise-fall intonation contour (L*H L%) characterises some regional varieties from southwestern Germany and northern Italy and represents a feature which makes the speakers of these varieties recognisable as such even to non-linguists. In this article we examine conversations from the Alemannic region and the Italian spoken in Bergamo in order to ascertain when this contour is used in conversation. The sequential embedding and the type of conve…
Text – Verstehen.
