Different Degrees of Analyzability—The Case of the Spanish Verbal Periphrasis [Tardar en + Infinitive]
In research on verbal periphrases, analyzability constitutes a central parameter, both for describing the grammaticalization processes to which these constructions are subject and for defining their categorical status. This paper focuses on a specific verbal periphrasis: [tardar en + infinitive]. Its historical development is examined, along with the recent emergence of a dative of interest in this construction, drawing on quantitative data from …
Do Spanish causal connectives vary in subjectivity? What crowdsourcing data reveal about native speakers’ preferences
Language users have preferences for the connectives they choose to express causal relations. These choices may depend on the subjectivity involved in the relation. Dutch connectives illustrate this situation clearly: want (‘since/for’) is preferred typically for expressing subjective relations and omdat (‘because’) for objective ones. While various corpus-based studies have revealed a similar pattern in other languages, little attention has been …
Changing frequencies in a constructional landscape
Many studies on Spanish verbal periphrases either discuss the general features of the syntactic category or analyse the semantic and functional differences between specific members of that category. The present paper focusses on one particular periphrasis, parecer “to seem” + infinitive but, at the same time, takes into account a similar, impersonal construction with parecer . Adopting a constructionist, usage-based approach, data are drawn from …
On the History of Ante(s)
In this paper we will describe the historical development of the Spanish doublet ante-antes ('before') and explore the question whether a process of exaptation is involved (cf. Lass 1990). We will argue that the final -s of antes, that originally marked the adverbial status of the word, in the course of time had become a kind of morphological 'junk' (cf. Lass 1990) and, subsequently, could be exploited in order to encode the semantic opposition b…
