Passing is giving: The origin and historical development of the polyfunctional morpheme ti42 in Tunxi Hui Chinese
This paper focuses on the origin of a polyfunctional morpheme ti 42 in Tunxi Hui Chinese, a little-studied Hui Sinitic language with about 140,000 speakers in Tunxi, Anhui Province of China. This versatile morpheme represents a radical syncretism of nine disparate functions, including that between the lexical verb give and the allative, locative, and temporal marking, which is seldom reported in the literature. Is Give reliable for genealogical relatedness? A case study of extricable etyma of Give in Huī Chinese
This study provides an etymological study of one of the basic lexical items GIVE in a sample of 24 varieties of Huī Chinese, a lesser-known transitional group of Sinitic languages. By the historical-comparative method and phonological reconstruction, this study reveals over ten distinct etyma of GIVE in these geographically adjacent and genetically affiliated Huī dialects, such as ‘distribute’, ‘take’, ‘stretch’, ‘hold’, ‘give’, ‘pass’, ‘provide’…
Contact-Induced Layering and Diffusion in Yuè Chinese Varieties-The *-iun/iut and *-un/ut Merger Reconsidered
This study re-investigates the merger of *-iun/iut and *-un/ut in 46 Yuè Chinese varieties, which lacks explanatory treatment, from the variant derivative patterns of *-iun/iut > [yn]/[yt] and *-un/ut > [yn]/[yt]. The historical-comparative method was employed as the frame to analyze spatial (geographic) variation obtained from QGIS. The data showed that the merger of the reflexes of *-iun/iut and *-un/ut does not prevail in the majority of Yuè v…
