Uniquely human temporal thoughts
Life on Earth will eventually come to an end. The thought expressed in the previous sentence is about a point in time that is not known to the individual entertaining the thought. This paper is concerned with the nature of such temporal thoughts. We propose that the capacity to mentally represent thoughts about non‐specific temporal intervals is a unique aspect of human cognition. We suggest that this capacity is a consequence of the fact that hu…
Proportionality and conservativity: The view from Turkish
Proportional numerals like 70% and two-thirds, which express a relation between two quantities, give rise to distinct interpretations inside different constructions. In The company hired 70% of the women, the cardinality of the women that are hired is compared to the cardinality of all the women (a proportional reading). In The company hired 70% women, on the other hand, the cardinality of the women that are hired is compared to the cardinality o…
Assigning meaning to light verbs in Turkish
Light verb constructions (e.g., give a kiss to somebody) syntactically reflect typical ditransitive structures (e.g., give a violin to somebody) yet it is not clear whether these two structures thematically similar as well. We tested Turkish-speaking adults on their construal of light verb constructions with respect to the number of thematic roles they perceive in the event structure in a rating study. The light verb give with a different noun ph…
Labeling, Concord, and Nominal Syntax in Turkish
According to Chomsky's Labeling Algorithm the merger of two phrases, i.e., {XP, YP}, is labeled either via feature sharing between the two elements or by ignoring the lower copies of movement chains. It is not immediately clear, within this approach, how adjunction structures such as {aP, nP} are to be labeled. In those languages where adjectives show concord with nouns in φ features, the shared features may provide the label. This option is not a…
Asymmetric coordination in Turkish
Exclusive Free Choice in Turkish
In this paper, we will be concerned with a type of interpretation associated with ya...ya... disjunction in Turkish where the Free-Choice inference is obligatorily accompanied with the Prohibition inference. We claim that such a reading arises as a consequence of the fact that each disjunct inside ya...ya... disjunction is parsed with only (overt or covert). We show that the scalar nature of only, which we model as a restriction on alternatives, …
