  • Speech Acts and Grammar

Open Access•Andrea Golato, Peter Golato et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2025

Linguists and language philosophers have long since recognized that language is used not only to describe states of affairs and events but also to do certain things (for instance, complaining, praising, etc.). The acts that a speaker performs when uttering a sentence are called speech acts. The term speech act goes back to the language philosophers John L. Austin and John R. Searle. • Hop(p)la in French and German

    Open Access•Andrea Golato, Peter S Golato•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 27

There is a growing body of conversation analytic research on the role of vocalizations and interjections in interaction. This conversation analytic article contributes to this research by comparing the use and functions of the interjection hop(p)la in French and German interaction. While hop(p)la occurs frequently in everyday French and German conversation, it has not been studied as it occurs in real time. The data come from publicly-available d…

Through these turns, participants index their commitment to the likelihood of the state of affairs expre…

  • Pragmatics Research Methods

Open Access•Andrea Golato, Peter Golato et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2019

This entry presents an overview of the different research methods (i.e., data collection and data analysis procedures) used in pragmatics research. Given that various theoretical approaches within pragmatics employ similar data collection and data analysis procedures, this entry is not organized by theoretical approach but by the research methods available. The section on data collection procedures is divided into three parts: it first discusses …

  • Pragmatics Research Methods

Open Access•Andrea Golato, Peter Golato et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

As the entries in this encyclopedia demonstrate, there are a number of theoretical approaches to the study of pragmatics, or language use. And similarly, there are a number of different research methods, that is, data collection techniques and subsequent data analysis procedures.
