  • The Geography of Meaning: Investigating Semantic Differences Across German Dialects

    Open Access•Alfred Lameli, Matthias Hahn•ARTICLE•Languages•2026

This study reconstructs the geography of meaning of the German perception verb schmecken on the basis of 30 major dialect dictionaries, treating them as a distributed semantic corpus and coding attestations as binary variables reflecting the presence or absence of semantic options. Combining a construal-based framework with spatial modeling, the analysis shows that the polysemy of schmecken is structured by three mutually reinforcing forces: embo…

Forschungszentrum Deutscher Sprachatlas, Forschungszentrum Deutscher…•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und…•2026

For research on regional languages, the rapid development of AI technology in recent years offers significant innovative potential. At the same time, the discipline carries a particular responsibility when it comes to representing regional language in the digital sphere. The digital transformation confronts the field with three overarching development goals: (1) harnessing the potential of AI, (2) depicting cultural diversity, and (3) shaping dig…

  • Dialectal Dynamics-An Introduction

Open Access•Alfred Lameli, Simonetta Montemagni et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 38

The study of dialects leads very naturally to the study of their geographic distribution and the nature of the distribution, e.g., by examining whether the distribution is based simply on geographic distance or on relatively distinct dialect regions. Dialectal dynamics poses the further question of why the distribution takes the form it does. Does variation arise through migration, i.e., due to the relative lack of communication among people who …

  • The replacement of diminutive suffixes in the New High German period: A time series analysis in word formation

    Open Access•Alfred Lameli•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Linguistics•2022

This article addresses the replacement of the diminutive form ‐ lein by ‐ chen as the leading suffix in written German during the New High German period. A large sample of diminutives from 1600–1900, retrieved from the DTA corpus, forms the basis of this investigation. The study aims to provide a detailed periodization of the replacement process with regard to both types and tokens. By using methods from computational linguistics and time series …

  • Syllable Structure Spatially Distributed: Patterns of Monosyllables in German Dialects

    Open Access•Alfred Lameli•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2022

This study presents a micro-typological description of German dialects, focusing on the structure of 13,492 tokens of monosyllables, across 182 locations within Germany. Based on data from the Phonetischer Atlas der Bundesrepublik Deutschland , systematic geographical differences in both the segmental and prosodic organization of syllables are explored. The analysis reveals a North–South contrast in the organization of syllable structure. While t…

Roland Kehrein, Alfred Lameli et al.•BOOK•Regionale Variation des Deutschen•2015

Regional varieties of the German language have undergone major change in the course of the 20 th century, stimulating major research projects employing diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. • Strukturen im Sprachraum: Analysen zur arealtypologischen Komplexität der Dialekte in Deutschland

    Alfred Lameli•BOOK•Strukturen Im Sprachraum•2013

This book establishes new criteria for defining the German linguistic landscape. The spatio-structural analysesresult in a data-driven model of historical dialects that contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of language. By linking the analysis to extra-linguistic factors, it also serves as a structural bridge for cultural scholars working in other disciplines.

  • Language and Space: An International Handbook of Linguistic Variation

Jürgen Erich Schmidt, Peter Auer et al.•BOOK•Language Mapping : Part I. Part II•2010

The Handbook of Language Mapping aims to explore the core methodological and theoretical approaches of linguistic cartography. In both empirical and theoretical linguistics, the spatial variation of language is of increasing interest and the visualization of language in space is therefore also of growing significance. It is the precondition for correct data interpretation. But how does it work? What has to be considered when drawing a map? And ho…

  • Phonetic Measurement and Metalinguistic Judgment

    Open Access•Alfred Lameli•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2004

This article compares the results of measurements of objective language data with the subjective judgments of linguistically naïve individuals. The comparison is based upon recordings of speech orientated towards the standard language. The data surveyed are from the West Middle German city of Mainz and the northern Low German city of Neumünster. In both cases, recordings of council meetings, in which members of a defined social group are acting i…
