  • De la dynamique phrastique. Grammaire, chorématique et Théorie des Catastrophes

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Estudos Semióticos•2023

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Revista Acta Semiotica•2022

  • Saussure’s Prolegomena—Toward a Semiotics of the Mind

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2022•References: 2

The study of language is based either on the word or on the sentence as basic units. Ferdinand de Saussure opted for the word; other linguists later preferred the sentence or chose to ignore the difference between word and sentence. Words, however, have extralinguistic functions related to the topologies of thought, the spontaneous geometrical imageries of meaningful mental figuration, as we know them from sign posts, from verbal descriptions, an…

  • The Garden

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt, Ulf Cronquist•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2022•References: 2

After giving some contextual information, we propose an analysis of music and meaning in the song “The Garden,” as performed by the rock group Einstürzende Neubauten in the official video from the 1996 release of the album Ende Neu . We present a semiotic blending model of the narrative content of the song and of its imagery, partly determined by the structure and character of the music. Finally, we add a view of the apocalyptic perspective of so…

  • Pragmatics and Semiotics

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Revista Acta Semiotica•2021

Meaning is determined by both immanent and transcendent semiotic structuring : it is both conceptual and contextual. The recursion of semiosis makes it possible to understand and theorize this open but non-chaotic relation between minimal, medial, and maximal sign structures and the experiential lifeworld that infuses social systems with meaning and lets cultural, semiosic, and mental content develop as a continuity. Semiotics and pragmatics are …

  • Diagrams and mental figuration

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt, Ulf Cronquist•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2019•References: 8

We all intuitively know what a diagram is, and still it is surprisingly difficult to describe it as a semiotic function or type. In this article, we present four groups of hypotheses in view of a clarification. We hypothesize: (1) That diagrams are signs of a distinct type, unknown to classical semiotics; (2) That the elementary graphs of a diagram are all derived from lines and points in topological mental spaces. The mind applies these diagramm…

  • The Meaning and Madness of Money

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this paper, I propose an overall model of the semantic and semiotic functions of money and capital forms, based on an ecological view of human activity and a theory of the origin of money (coined precious metals). The meaning of money is replaced in a structured human perspective, and a critical discussion is outlined on the grounds of the material and capital flows and functions identified. The madness of money follows from the separation of …

  • D’où vient le sens? Remarques sur la sémio-phénoménologie de Greimas

Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt, Per Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2017•References: 5

Greimas’ structural semantics has always intrigued both linguists and philosophers of meaning, because of its ambiguous relations to language and to life-world phenomenology. These critical remarks attempt to clarify these questions by asking a simpler one: Where does meaning come from? Is language, discourse, or the human mind its base? My discussion examines the Paris School’s semio-phenomenology and its anchoring of meaning both in discourse a…

  • The World, Seen From Within (II) Sorts of Reality—A Semio-Cognitive Ontology and Phenomenology

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2016

This short essay discusses the conditions-and the general contours-of a viable ontology assigning a place to meaning in the architecture of the sorts of reality we acknowledge in the framework of a non-reductive realist philosophy (John Searle 1 , Barry Smith 2 ) compatible with both cognitive and semiotic approaches to the human world

  • The World, Seen From Within (III) On Mind and Matter, and the Founders of Rationalism

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2016•References: 3

The aim of the following essay is to find a semantic core pattern, characterizing its ontology or metaphysics, in the form of thinking that emerged in the work of Descartes, spread and was modified through Spinoza and Leibniz, and became the panorama of science-oriented philosophies constituting the implicit or explicit underpinnings of contemporary thinking, research, and debate, especially in relation to the study of meaning and mind

  • The World, Seen From Within—Three Essays on Metaphysics and Meaning

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2016

These short essays reflect an exploration of a question that has intrigued me for quite some time, namely why-in modern and contemporary thinking and research-the reference to the founders of modern rationality, especially Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz, is still so uncertain, timid, vague, even in scholarly contexts, and why the issue of ontological monism versus dualism keeps coming up in everyday debate involving matter, mind, consciousness, …

  • Deixis and the Ontology of Signs

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2016•References: 1

This note aims at clarifying the relation holding or not holding between deixis and indexicality, and then elaborating a new model based on the Danish semiotic enunciation theory that could also account for reference. The 'mystery' in question is the mysterious fact that the intersubjective aspect of deixis has to constitute the referential anchoring of signified meaning in the extra-communicational world. The model proposed may lay the ground fo…

  • What Is Culture?—A Grounding Question for Cognitive Semiotics

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2015

This article first outlines the principle of a cognitive semiotics, and in this framework presents a sign classification taking into consideration the crucial importance of time. It then offers a stratified interpretation of the Lotmanian concept of semiosphere, and continues with a study of the contradiction holding between cultural and socio-functional meanings. This leads to an analysis of ethnic passions and ethnic identity, and finally to a …

The Computer as Medium brings insights from art, literature and theatre to bear on computers and discusses the communicative and organizational nature of computer networks within a historical perspective. • Genese og diegese - et problem i den almene narratologi

    Open Access•Peer Aage Brandt•ARTICLE•Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift•1989

The author proposes a structural distinction between the petits récits and the grands récits (according to Lyotard), between binary and trivial narrativity, on one hand, and bifurcational and fatal narrativity, on the other: reversibility vs. irreversibility. The ontological implications of the two types are distinct, and philosophy should be aware of this categorical difference; narrative theology and “theo-semiotics” in general must do it, if t…
