Visual and spatial hybridity in the early modern Iberian world
The present Special Issue examines visual and spatial hybridity in order to explore how theories of encounter, hybridity and globalisation can be applied to the visual arts of the Iberian world in both European and extra‐European contexts. It examines hybridity through case studies from Spain and Portugal, as well as cultural, artistic and architectural production in other imperial centres in the Iberian world. This essay is a study of the marble baroque sculpture of St Rose of Lima, later the patron saint of South America and the Philippines. The sculpture was executed by the Maltese artist active in Rome, Melchiorre Cafà (1636 – 1667), and signed and dated 1665. It was destined for the Dominican church of Sto Domingo in Lima. The Iberian peninsula and Viceregal America were inextricably linked politically and culturally from the sixteenth century onwa…

This article explores a find of ivories excavated in the first decade of the current century from a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Mariana Islands, almost 1500 miles from the Philippines, along the route the Manila galleons took on their way to Mexico. In 1601 one of those galleons, the Santa Margarita, sank, along with its rich cargo of goods from the Philippines. The cargo included ivory sculptures, over 300 of which have n…

Pietra Dura. Bilder aus Stein
In the 1650s, Oliver Cromwell was presented with an exquisite pietra dura casket for perfumes and balsam by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand II de‘ Medici. The richly coloured hardstones are formed into a panel of landscape scenes, while another shows a fine-feathered bird amidst flowers and tendrils; clusters of fruit adorn the lid. This diplomatic gift is now in the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, apparently never having been…

Juan Facundo Riaño (1829–1901), an eminent Spanish scholar, administrator and politician, was appointed as adviser to the South Kensington Museum on the acquisition of Spanish works of art in 1870. He sent monthly reports to the Museum authorities from 1871 to 1877, noting items for sale in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain. As well as recommending purchases of plaster casts and photographs, he was responsible for a number of important acquisitions, …
