John Marshall Stalnaker (1903–1990): Obituary
On the degree of stability of measured hypnotizability over a 25-year period
Conducted a longitudinal study of hypnotizability, as measured by the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form A, that yielded a relatively high degree of stability in hypnotic responsiveness over repeated testings spanning a 25-year period. The 50 Ss were retested in 1985, after tests when they were students, between 1958-1962 and again in 1970. The statistically significant stability coefficients were .64 (10-year retest), .82 (15-year rete…

Robert I. Watson and the founding of division 26 of the American psychological association
Robert I. Watson was instrumental in the founding of Division 26 of the American Psychological Association (the Division of the History of Psychology). This article traces Watson's involvement in the prehistory of the division and describes his installation as its first president in 1966.
The trilogy of mind: Cognition, affection, and conation
The tripartite classification of mental activities into cognition, affection, and conation originated in the German faculty psychology of the eighteenth century, but was adopted by the association psychologists of the nineteenth century of Scotland, England, and America. Its influence extended into the twentieth century through the writings of William McDougall. It is proposed that the classificatory scheme is still useful in the assessment of co…

Visual Imagery and the Discrimination of Differences Between Altered Pictures Simultaneously and Successively Presented
Ten 'good' visual imagers and ten 'poor' imagers, representing the upper and lower halves of an unselected sample of adult volunteers, were given a task of detecting differences between altered pictures presented in pairs, either simultaneously or successively. Performance was measured by reaction time. 'Good' imagers reacted faster than 'poor' imagers, and the mode of presentation (simultaneous v. successive) did not affect their performances. '…

Failure to Alter Skin Inflammation by Hypnotic Suggestion in Five Subjects with Normal Skin Reactivity
Attempts to alter skin reactivity to mumps antigen, trypsin or histamine by direct hypnotic suggestion were unsuccessful despite the use of well trained hypnotic subjects. Failure to replicate earlier positive findings may be due to the use of subjects with normal, as opposed to labile, skin reactivity

Human motives and the concept of the self
In order to understand how human motives affect human conduct it is necessary to deal with the question of how problems arising by the so-called defense-mechanisms or mechanisms of adjustment influence us. In reviewing the mechanisms of adjustment in motivational theory the author points out the lack of systematic treatment, and the paucity of carefully formulated experimentation. The assumption is made that the mechanisms imply a self-reference,…

Reinforcement and Inhibition of Eyelid Reflexes
