Uusi nationalismitutkimus ja historia: Eletty kansakunta toisen maailmansodan ja vuoden 1990 murroskohtien jälkeen
This introductory article discusses approaches and theories in the study of nationalism from the 1980s until the present. We examine on the one hand, how nationalism studies can contribute to the understanding of post-war history, and on the other, what nationalism studies can gain from the case of Finnish history between 1945 and 2000. We argue that the classics of historical nationalism studies of the 1980 and 1990s need to be critically re-eva…
Predisposed vulnerabilities and survival among the Finnish soldiers of World War II: Historical life course approach
In this methodological paper we propose a historical life course approach to analyze soldiers' predispositions to experience war-related violence and stress and to respond to it. We argue that a closer quantitative inspection of pre-war and wartime factors will help to understand the various causes leading to different exposures to stress and violence during the war, which have consequently had different outcomes for the war survivors' later live…
Engineering students’ justifications for their selections in structured learning diaries
Introduction New digital tools such as structured learning diaries (SLD) can serve as both a measurement and intervention tool, at scale. However, we do not yet know how students use the SLD tool and justify their actions within it. Clickable items are easy to use, but do these diaries hold any deeper meaning for students? This study aims to explore the means of justification used by students to create SLD content, their profiles based on these j…
Structured learning diary and epistemic beliefs predict academic achievement in higher education
Introduction Epistemic cognition, which explores how knowledge is acquired, applied, and critically evaluated, is closely linked to learning. However, despite numerous studies from various perspectives, much remains to be learned about this essential and predominantly positive connection. Despite the positive connection between epistemic cognition and learning, epistemic measures have not been widely used in predicting students’ academic achievem…

National indifferences during everyday nationalism: Experiencing the nation in Finland in the aftermath of the Second World War
Our article discusses the adaptability of the concept of national indifference to the context of post‐war Finnish society and everyday nationalism. This period witnessed a transformation of previously exclusive and aggressive nationalism into a tempered and relatively inclusive version. Within this historical context, national indifference became an entangled category that could not be clearly attributed to a specific group of people but which ca…
“Replacing teachers? Doubt it.” Practitioners' views on adaptive learning technologies' impact on the teaching profession
Novel learning technologies have potential in reshaping the teaching profession by automating some parts of the work. However, teachers' perspectives toward automation have generally been critical. In the present study, we examine Finnish education practitioners' thoughts on adaptive learning technologies and their impact on the teaching profession. Using thematic and epistemic network analysis (ENA), we analyzed 114 social media posts. Supportiv…
Taistelun ja tappion näyt: Kesän 1944 kokemushistoria suomalaisissa painajaisissa ja elokuvissa
Artikkelini käsittelee sotapainajaisten ja sotaan viittaavien elokuvien sisältöä ja yhteyttä toisen maailmansodan jälkeisessä Suomessa. Ensimmäinen tutkimuskysymykseni on, miten kesän 1944 taistelut ja jatkosodan päättyminen näkyivät suomalaisveteraanien sodanjälkeisissä unissa. Toiseksi tutkin, miten sotapainajaisten aiheet ilmenivät suomalaisissa elokuvissa 1940- ja 1950-luvuilla. Tarkastelutapani on kokemushistoriallinen, millä tarkoitan sen t…
Forging a master narrative for a nation: Finnish history as a script during the Second World War
In our article, we study how Finnish historians produced historical texts to be applied inside the Finnish army to give lessons, speeches, and informal talks to the rank-and-file soldiers during two periods: first during the Winter War of 1939–40 and then in the last stages of the Continuation War in 1944. Employing narratological methodology to this task, we examine the purposeful construction of a master narrative of the national past by tellin…
Narrative and experience: Interdisciplinary methodologies between history and narratology
This introduction discusses key elements in the connections between narrative and experience from the viewpoints of narratology and historical studies. The linguistic turn and the several narrative turns have brought narratology and historiography close together, and a key concept in this development has been experience. Postclassical narratology emphasizes experientiality as the core of narrative, and new trends in historiography foreground the …
Religion, Patriotism and War Experience in Digitized Wartime Letters in Finland, 1939–44
This article examines religious and patriotic languages in digitized letters written by ordinary Finnish people in the Second World War. We combine qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse how religious and patriotic languages were used throughout the war years. Our findings show that the frequency of religious and patriotic vocabulary fluctuated widely during the war. Religious words were most notably connected to the intensity of the war…

Between Defeat and Victory: Finnish memory culture of the Second World War
The article focuses on five essential phenomena in the Finnish memory culture of the three Finnish wars fought in 1939-45, namely, 1) the memory of the fallen; 2) the influential work by author Vin Linna; 3) the contested memory politics and veteran cultures in the 1960s and 1970s; 4) Germany and the Holocaust in the Finnish memory culture; 5) and the 'neo-patriotic' turn in the commemoration of the wars from the end of the 1980s onwards. The Finn…
