  • Iconoclasm – A Geographical Viewpoint

    Open Access•Gideon Biger•ARTICLE•European Review•2022•References: 1

Iconoclasm mainly concerns the destruction of icons, based on the Commandment of the Bible ‘ Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image ...’ (Exodus 20:4). Iconoclasm can be presented in two different ways. One is that of an ‘inside aspect’, taking place within a given religious system. The other is an ‘outside aspect’, through which a religious system destroys the religious symbols of another religion. Dealing mainly with the ‘outside aspect…

  • Historical Geography and International Boundaries

    Open Access•Gideon Biger•ARTICLE•European Review•2020•References: 5

International boundaries are man-made separation lines. All of today’s boundaries were created in the past, sometimes years, sometimes decades, even in some cases centuries ago. Thus, international boundaries reflect the historical moments in the life of a State, when its limits were made according to its force and ability at a given time. Understanding the process of boundary making and the location of boundaries can become a bridge of research …

    Gideon Biger•ARTICLE•Israel Studies•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Palestine, Eretz-Israel, Israel, Terra Santa, The Holy Land, Philistines—all those names have been given to a stretch of land situated on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. This was, and still is, one of the most important pieces of land, which the world has been dealing with during the last two thousand years. The Arab-Israeli conflict, which has run for the last hundred years, is but the last in a series of long struggles, which dictat…

    Open Access•Nili Liphschitz, Gideon Biger•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 12

It was widely accepted that, in the past, forests of Aleppo pine, Pinus halepensis (‘Jerusalem pine’ in Hebrew), were common in Israel-Palestine and covered vast areas of its mountains. However, an interdisci plinary research project, using botanical, historical and geographical evidence, shows a different picture. The pine is mentioned only once in the Bible, and rarely in other religious sources. Descriptions of pine forests, or even isolated s…

    Gideon Biger•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•1982

The term 'political map' denotes a map designating political boundaries that form part of a written agreement. An early example of one of these maps is a map produced in 1841 by drawing lines on a map of Egypt that had been published some years earlier. The map formed part of an agreement between the Ottoman (Turkish) Sultan and Mohammed Ali, then ruler of Egypt, and marked the beginning of modern Egypt. The original map was lost, but a copy was …
