  • Climate change governance by central banks in an era of interlocking crises

    Open Access•Jacqueline Best, Marisa Paterson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 84

In this article, we survey the literature on central bank action on climate change, focusing particularly on how the combined crises of COVID-19, inflation, and Ukraine have affected this action. We argue that the current situation is a critical juncture in which recent crises have created a highly indeterminate situation regarding what central banks might do regarding climate change. To date, some central banks have used these crises as opportun…

  • The fantasy of carbon offsetting

    Ron Watts•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2021•Cited by: 16•References: 52

Carbon offsetting has been beset by problems and failures, and relies on the mobilisation of supportive discourses and knowledge-claims to retain a sense of credibility. Psycho-analytical ideology critique can help explain how these processes interact with questions of subjectivity. Analysis of interviews with carbon offset market practitioners suggests that identification with carbon offsetting is only partial, and that it is sustained through d…

  • Apaches Without and Enemies Within

    Open Access•Ron Watts, Robert N Watt•ARTICLE•War in History•2011•References: 3

When attempting to confront hostile Apache guerrillas in New Mexico between 1879 and 1881, the US Army encountered a style of warfare which took merciless advantage of its weaknesses. However, the failure of the army to defeat its enemies can be only partially ascribed to this factor. Its efforts were further hampered by the political context within which it had to operate. Nevertheless, these factors occasionally worked in the army’s favour. Whe…

  • Victorio’s Military and Political Leadership of the Warm Springs Apaches

    Open Access•Ron Watts, Robert N Watt•ARTICLE•War in History•2011•References: 1

Victorio is widely acknowledged as being one of the best guerrilla leaders of the Apache Wars during the 1870s and 1880s. Yet previous accounts of Victorio make little or no effort to demonstrate why he was such an effective leader. This article combines a knowledge of Apache warfare techniques and primary sources to argue that not only did Victorio demonstrate a mastery of these principles of guerrilla warfare; he also displayed an ability to in…

  • Raiders of a Lost Art? Apache War and Society

Ron Watts, Robert N Watt•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2002•Cited by: 4

Through examining the guerrilla tactics of the Apaches, I hope to challenge an often-implicit assumption that formalized European principles of warfare are automatically superior to those of other societies. Drawing a brief parallel with current events, I shall argue that even today this is a risky assumption to make. Apache principles of war were a product of a social organization, which was geared towards raiding and warfare, based upon a clear…

  • Transferring to English

Open Access•Sandra Roche, Ron Watts et al.•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•1986

In this paper we wish to examine some of the issues raised by the situation in a Bilingual program when the children transfer from literacy in the vernacular to literacy in English, and to outline what we consider to be some of the reasons for the success of the Lajamanu program in this area.Theoretically, the virtue of education for children in their first language first is that they develop a surer grasp of new concepts and skills taught and gr…
