  • Analysis of the geographic pattern of the police reports for domestic violence in Girona (Spain)

Open Access•Luigi Serra, Laura Serra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

These results can be useful for social protection services to design policies specifically aimed at women residing in those areas with the highest risk. Moreover, the use of spatial statistical techniques together with geographic information systems tools is a good strategy to analyse domestic violence and other types of offences because they not only allow to graphically identify the spatial distribution, but it is also a good tool to identify p…

  • Prevalence of sexual harassment among young Spaniards before, during, and after the Covid-19 lockdown period in Spain

    Open Access•Laura Vall-llosera, Laura Serra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

These findings highlight that sexual harassment presents a high prevalence among young people, especially cyber-harassment, and workplace harassment and it is important to be aware that young women are more likely to suffer harassment and even more if they do not have a partner or have LGB orientation. During the lockdown sexual harassment has moved from public spaces to the social network

  • Influence maternal background has on children’s mental health

Open Access•Elena Arroyo-Borrell, Gemma Renart et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2017

In conclusion, both a mother's health and her socioeconomic status, as well as other household characteristics, are found to be related to her children's mental well-being. Although the crisis has not significantly changed mental health disorders in children or the social gradient of parents in general, at-risk children are the most negatively affected in the Spanish economic downturn

  • Inequalities in suicide mortality rates and the economic recession in the municipalities of Catalonia, Spain

Open Access•Carme Saurina, Manel Marzo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2015

The increase in the suicide rate from 2010 in Catalonia was not statistically significant as a whole, with the exception of working-aged women (16-64 years) living in municipalities with 10,000 or more inhabitants. We have not found this increase to be associated with rising unemployment in any of the cases. Future research into the effects of economic recessions on suicide mortality should take into account inequalities by age, sex and size of m…

  • A conditional model for estimating the increase in suicides associated with the 2008–2010 economic recession in England

Carme Saurina, Basili Bragulat et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 16

BACKGROUND: Although evidence of the effects of the economic crisis on suicides is quite low, a recent article shows that the increase in suicides in England between 2008 and 2010 could be associated with the rise in unemployment. Our study analysed whether this effect was the same for all regions of England, using a conditional model which explicitly allows estimation of regional time trends and the effects of unemployment on suicides at the reg…

  • Factors determining family planning in Catalonia. Sources of inequity

Open Access•Carme Saurina, Laura Vall-llosera et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2012

The use of family planning methods is positively related to a higher level of education and having children over 14. Factors such as sex, age, income and self-perceived health do not appear to influence their use. Furthermore, being a native of this country, the European Union or Central/South America represents a greater likelihood of use than being African or Asian. Although no general differences in use were found between sexes, the difference…

  • Does the effect of gender modify the relationship between deprivation and mortality

Open Access•Natalia Salcedo, Marc Sáez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

We believe our results were obtained using a more robust methodology. First off, we have built a better index that allows us to directly collect the variability of contextual variables without having to use arbitrary weights. Secondly, we have solved two major problems that are present in spatial ecological regressions, i.e. those that use spatial data and, consequently, perform a spatial adjustment in order to obtain consistent estimators

  • A qualitative analysis of immigrant population health practices in the Girona Healthcare Region

    Open Access•Carme Saurina, Laura Vall-llosera et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The results we have obtained support the idea that feeling unwell is a psycho-social process, as it takes place within a specific socio-cultural situation and spans a range of beliefs, perceptions and ideas regarding symptomology and how to treat it

  • Accurately estimating breast cancer survival in Spain

Open Access•Carmen Martos, M Carmen Martos et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2009

In Spain it is imperative that there be systematic use of NDI data to supplement cancer registries, so that comparisons of relative survival rates between registries can be improved

  • Area deprivation and mortality in the provincial capital cities of Andalusia and Catalonia (Spain)

    Ricardo Ocana-Riola, Carme Saurina et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 31

OBJECTIVE: To study the linkage between material deprivation and mortality from all causes, for men and women separately, in the capital cities of the provinces in Andalusia and Catalonia (Spain). METHODS: A small-area ecological study was devised using the census section as the unit for analysis. 188,983 Deaths occurring in the capital cities of the Andalusian provinces and 109,478 deaths recorded in the Catalan capital cities were examined. Pri…
